Job Summary

This is a 12-month limited term recruitment for a Pest Prevention Assistant I position in the Department of Food & Agriculture. The successful candidate will perform routine field or staff support work for various fruit fly delimitation programs, maintaining fruit fly trapping routes, applying pesticides, and overseeing treatment activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform field, laboratory, or staff duties to deploy traps, perform visual surveys, or apply control measures for target pests.
  • Plan, organize, and monitor trapping, visual survey, or treatment routes and outside vendors to ensure compliance with Department policies and procedures.
  • Assemble equipment and mix chemicals using the appropriate treatment and equipment method.
  • Work with field staff in solving technical problems and communicate effectively with homeowners and/or the general public.
  • Prepare and complete accurate and detailed technical reports.
  • Travel to various locations throughout the State to attend meetings or trainings related to pest detection and/or treatment.
Working Conditions

The duties of this position are primarily conducted outdoors and may be exposed to extreme temperatures and weather, uneven terrain, and various noise levels. The incumbent may work within an office/warehouse environment furnished with a variety of office equipment.

Requirements
  • Must be able to apply pesticides, haul loads of fruit and/or removed trees, and perform survey work.
  • Must be able to exercise good judgment, determine priorities, make appropriate decisions, and allocate staff and resources to achieve maximum results.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during the course of work.
