Job Summary

Geisinger Health System seeks a skilled Ophthalmic Care Assistant to assist physicians in the ophthalmologic care and treatment of patients. This role requires a high level of attention to detail and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced clinical environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist physicians with examinations, procedures, diagnostic studies, treatments, and dressings.
  • Compile preliminary histories on new patients and record new problems, including all current medications, on return patients on EMR charting.
  • Scribe in electronic medical record as dictated by physician.
  • Test visual acuity, near and distant, and intraocular pressures.
  • Administer dilating agents for ophthalmic fundus examination upon successful completion of ophthalmic pharmacology exam.
  • Escort patients to waiting area.
  • Perform ophthalmic testing, visual field testing, air tension testing, color vision testing, color sensitivity testing, automatic refractors, Retinomax, Keratometry, lensometry, Intraocular lens measurements, pachymetry, optical coherencetomography testing, photographic imaging and corneal topography.
  • Assist physician with minor clinic surgery, special procedures, ophthalmic lavage, and preoperative preparation of patients.
  • Provide postoperative instructions when indicated.
  • Assist with and set up laser treatments, including Argon, Krypton, and YAG lasers, ultrasound testing and cryopexy surgery.
  • Perform ultrasound for measuring intraocular lens.
  • Complete calculations of findings and obtain Keratometer readings.
  • Prepare cultures and pathology specimens for the laboratory and transport to the correct areas.
  • Take and record vital signs.
  • Clean and prepare instruments and equipment.
  • Send for repair or exchange.
  • Keep examining rooms clean, orderly, and well stocked with supplies.
  • Assist with the emergency admission of patients.
  • Ensure patient is properly transported to hospital unit.
  • Complete necessary charges for appliances, dressings, medications, special procedures, and testing for the patient.
  • Order pharmaceuticals, linen, stock, stationery, surgical instruments, and other ophthalmic supplies for clinic.

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED)
  • Certification(s) and License(s)
