POSITION OVERVIEW:

Under the guidance of the Aquatics Director, the Aquatic Safety Officer is responsible for ensuring safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and adjacent areas while fostering a secure and engaging environment that enhances member safety and participation.

This role involves executing these responsibilities in alignment with the mission, objectives, and policies set forth by the administrative team, governing bodies, and Board of Directors of the YMCA.

WORK SCHEDULE:
Available shifts throughout the week, including weekends, with hours ranging from early morning to evening.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Conducts active monitoring of the aquatic area.
  • Familiarizes with all emergency protocols and responds promptly to emergencies in line with YMCA guidelines, completing necessary documentation.
  • Builds and maintains positive relationships with members, participants, and fellow staff.
  • Understands and consistently applies safety regulations, policies, and procedures for the aquatic environment, keeping accurate records as mandated by the YMCA and state health regulations.
  • Performs equipment inspections and ensures availability of necessary tools.
  • Assesses the pool for safety hazards upon arrival.
  • Conducts chemical tests when not on guard duty and takes appropriate measures.
  • Participates in all staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Exemplifies relationship-building skills in all interactions.
  • Maintains clear and consistent communication within the area of responsibility.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be at least 16 years old.
  • Required certifications include CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen.
  • Current YMCA Lifeguard certification or equivalent is necessary.
  • Ability to uphold certification-level physical and mental preparedness.
  • Must demonstrate lifeguard competencies in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • Ability to effectively engage with diverse groups from various social and economic backgrounds.
  • Multi-lingual skills are preferred but not mandatory.

  • Ability to perform all lifeguard-related skills.
  • Capable of hearing sounds and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and surrounding areas.
  • Must remain vigilant with no lapses in awareness.
  • Ability to see and monitor all sections of the assigned area.
  • Must be able to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • The YMCA of the Triangle Area requires compliance with all COVID-related PPE, cleaning, reporting, and prevention protocols. Further training and details will be provided upon inquiry.
