Job Overview

The Special Education Teacher at Sisulu-Walker Charter School of Harlem plays a critical role in supporting the individual needs of all children in accordance with the school's mission and values. This position requires a dedicated and passionate educator who can provide direct special education services to students, develop and implement Individualized Education Plans (IEPs), and work collaboratively with teachers, parents, and administrators to ensure student success.

Responsibilities
  • Instructional Planning: Develop and implement lesson plans that support the individual needs of students, including those with IEPs.
  • Instructional Delivery: Provide high-quality instruction to students, using a variety of teaching methods and technologies to engage students and promote learning.
  • Student Assessment: Use formative and summative assessment tools to measure student achievement and progress towards learning objectives.
  • Learning Environment: Create a responsive learning environment that enables students to feel safe, creative, and supported.
  • Extracurricular Activities: Organize and supervise approved field trips and activities that enhance classroom learning.
  • Student Support and School Culture: Communicate effectively with students, families, colleagues, and administrators to ensure a positive and supportive school culture.
Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred.
  • Certification: New York State Special Education Certification required (Birth-2 or 1-6).
  • Experience: Experience working with at-risk student populations preferred.
  • Skills: Strong written, grammatical, presentation, and verbal communication skills; analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to work collaboratively and flexibly with a diverse team of teachers and administrators.
