Job Overview

The Quarto Group is on the lookout for a dedicated and exceptionally organized Editor with a passion for publishing to support the Chartwell Books imprint along with the Custom, Proprietary, and Value team. This role is designed to be remote.

Chartwell Books specializes in producing value editions across a diverse array of topics, including lifestyle, pop culture, culinary arts, guided journals, craft kits, and timeless classics. The Editor for Chartwell will take on the role of project leader for assigned initiatives, overseeing both book and book-plus titles. This includes generating and refining book and kit concepts, recruiting authors, crafting content, and managing projects from inception to publication.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the editorial lead for a variety of book and book-plus projects, guiding them from initial concept through manuscript development, editing, layout, and final production.
  • Conduct research to identify and recruit suitable authors, thereby enhancing the pool of talented writers.
  • Develop original content in-house as necessary, such as writing brief introductions, instructions for kit projects, and prompts for guided journals.
  • Independently generate and refine book and kit concepts, sharpen editorial angles, and produce written content, including cover text and captions.
  • Oversee timelines and collaborate with teams to ensure that book titles are delivered punctually and within budget.
  • Engage creatively with team members to conceive and execute high-quality project ideas.
  • Proactively contribute innovative ideas, staying informed on trends and pop culture events.
  • Draft concept briefs, catalog descriptions, and metadata.

Essential Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

Required

  • Understanding of publishing, particularly in the context of book and book-plus development and production.
  • Strong editing skills, encompassing developmental, copy, and line editing.
  • A proven track record of adhering to deadlines and budget constraints.
  • Proficiency with MS Word editing software.
  • Exceptional writing capabilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects efficiently and prioritize effectively under tight deadlines.
  • Familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Self-motivated, proactive, detail-oriented, open to feedback, and quick to learn.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to balance various responsibilities.
  • Outstanding organizational and project management abilities.

Education and Experience

Required

  • At least 5 to 8 years of editorial experience in the publishing industry.
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.

Preferred

  • Experience in illustrated publishing and conceptualizing products for both children and adults.
  • Familiarity with metadata and title management systems.
