Job Summary

This is a professional and technical security police position that requires working extra duty for Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) within the city of Norfolk, on HRT's light rail system, or as assigned in Norfolk. The ideal candidate will be a Norfolk police officer with a strong understanding of state, local, and federal criminal statutes affecting police/security work.

Key Responsibilities
  • Policing HRT property and working extra duty for HRT as a Norfolk police officer on the light rail system or other areas in Norfolk.
  • Preventing crimes and security incidents at all HRT facilities.
  • Protecting all HRT assets from crimes and investigating and documenting incidents daily in a daily log.
  • Providing security and code enforcement to support the light rail system as per regional directive.
  • Providing ordinance enforcement duties, during the hours of operations, on a schedule approved by the HRT Security Manager.
  • Patrolling within the light rail vehicles and on station platforms, assisting in inspecting passengers for valid fare media, issuing citations for fare evasion and other ordinances, providing customer assistance to passengers, and notifying the HRT Central Control by radio of emergency incidents.
  • Providing random, mobile security patrols at the VMSF Park-and-Ride lots.
  • Preparing reports of security incidents and daily logs and providing the reports to the HRT security police supervisor and/or HRT Security Manager.
  • Providing other security services as necessary, throughout the city of Norfolk, that may include bus transfer stations, HRT ferries, or other areas that require off-duty officers.
  • Having successfully completed a training course prescribed by HRT and additional training provided by HRT to familiarize them with potential electrical hazards and train operation in the HRT system.
  • Assuring that all security issues are properly documented in the daily log.
  • Assisting in any security-related personal problems.
  • Enforcing HRT parking policy at park-and-rides.
  • Providing security at HRT Commission meetings.
  • Managing records created and received in compliance with the Hampton Roads Transit Records Management Policies and Procedures.
Requirements
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with staff and the public, to understand and follow standard operating procedures, to perform duties in a professional manner and appearance, to write and investigate required reports, and to make independent and good judgment decisions within proper policy and procedures.
  • Knowledge and understanding of state, local, and federal criminal statutes affecting police/security work of Hampton Roads Transit.
  • Ability to communicate with all personnel.
  • Ability to work under pressure and otherwise stressful situations.
  • Skill in miscellaneous computer applications (e.g., word processing, Excel).
Software Requirements

Proficiency in using computer systems and the listed software applications associated with the performance of assigned work is essential. Basic problem-solving skills associated with software applications used are expected. Software usage relevant to job duties will be evaluated.

Safety Responsibility

Perform all job duties and responsibilities in a safe manner to protect one's self, fellow employees, and the public from injury or harm. Promote safety awareness and follow safety procedures and policies. Take an active part in reporting unsafe conditions and any hazards within the workplace to their Supervisor, Manager, and/or the Safety Department.

Training and/or Education
  • Current certification as a Norfolk police officer in the city of Norfolk
Required Experience
  • Three years of security or law enforcement work as a sworn officer
Licenses or Certificates
  • Possess a valid Driver's License issued from the jurisdiction of residence. Acquire a Virginia Driver's License within 60 days after the date of hire (in instances when an out-of-state license is not the applicant's current state of residence).
Special Requirements
  • Must be at least 21 years of age and be a US Citizen that has never been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor.
