License and Certification Requirements:
Paraprofessional Educator certificate issued by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (PSC) is mandatory.

Educational Requirements:

A high school diploma or equivalent is required, along with successful completion of the Praxis Parapro Assessment (prior to March 1, 2007) or the GACE Parapro Assessment. Alternatively, 60 semester or 90 quarter hours from a PSC approved college or university are necessary.


Experience Requirements:
Previous experience in a licensed child care setting is preferred.

Skills Requirements:

Familiarity with child development principles; proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; strong interpersonal skills; knowledge of office and media equipment; and the ability to represent Gwinnett County Public Schools effectively.


Key Responsibilities:

Assist in the instructional program within an assigned classroom, specifically supporting the supervision, care, and education of students with special needs in both regular and special education settings. Responsibilities include:


  • Modifying classroom activities, assignments, and materials under the guidance of the supervising teacher to support IEP goals and facilitate participation of all special education students.
  • Providing immediate first aid and medical assistance as directed by a healthcare professional to address urgent health needs.
  • Administering tests, homework, and make-up work to support teachers in the classroom.
  • Assisting medically fragile or physically disabled students in maintaining personal hygiene.
  • Supporting students with disabilities in grooming, community accessibility, and other daily needs as assigned by the teacher.
  • Regularly conferring with teachers to assist in evaluating student progress and implementing IEP objectives.
  • Implementing and collecting data under the supervision of the assigned teacher and IEP teams to reinforce learning.
  • Monitoring special education students in various settings to ensure a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Performing record-keeping and support functions to assist the teacher in maintaining necessary records and materials.
  • Providing instruction to students in individual and group activities under the supervision of the assigned teacher.
  • Responding to emergency situations to address immediate safety concerns, including physical de-escalation procedures as trained.
  • Assisting with monitoring duties, which may include hallways, lunchroom, restrooms, and/or bus duty as assigned.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit for extended periods, talk, hear, stand, and walk. The role may require the use of hands for various tasks, significant finger dexterity, and the ability to stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
