Position Overview:

The Registered Nurse in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is responsible for delivering proficient, empathetic, and personalized nursing care to a designated group of patients within the unit. This role is essential in ensuring that care is secure, efficient, effective, and timely, while also addressing the cultural, spiritual, and ethnic needs of patients and their families, in alignment with the mission and core values of New England Baptist Hospital.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver direct patient care and make informed nursing decisions to guarantee appropriate care for all patient demographics.
  • Develop and execute individualized patient care plans that reflect contemporary nursing practice standards, policies, and protocols.
  • Exhibit professional dedication and assume personal accountability for patient safety.
  • Ensure accurate patient identification during care delivery in accordance with established policies.
  • Administer medications in compliance with hospital policies and procedures.
  • Monitor and document patient responses to medications and therapies, providing interventions as necessary.
  • Collect and label specimens for diagnostic testing in line with patient identification protocols.
  • Maintain and update patient medical records following hospital and departmental guidelines.
  • Manage pain effectively, ensuring thorough assessment, documentation, and management of patient discomfort.
  • Facilitate patient admissions, transfers, and discharges.
  • Coordinate with ancillary departments as required, confirming patient admission history through electronic or paper records.
  • Engage in communication and collaboration with the patient care team, advocating for patients when appropriate.
  • Delegate patient care tasks to team members based on their knowledge and skill levels, adhering to the care plan and documenting any changes.
  • Follow infection control protocols, including hand hygiene and isolation precautions.
  • Ensure proper cleaning of equipment in accordance with hospital standards.
  • Handle and dispose of biohazardous materials according to established procedures.
  • Educate patients about expected outcomes related to medical procedures.
  • Clarify patient privacy requirements to patients, families, and visitors, ensuring compliance with privacy standards.
  • Identify and communicate emergency situations promptly to the appropriate team members.
  • Perform duties in accordance with established standards, regulations, and guidelines.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to enhance clinical expertise and skills.
  • Participate in patient safety and quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes.
  • Foster a collaborative work environment with colleagues to promote a positive workplace culture.
  • Share knowledge and skills with peers and novice practitioners in a supportive manner.

Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is required.

Licensure/Certification: Must possess a valid RN license in Massachusetts and hold current American Heart Association ACLS/BLS certifications.

Experience: A minimum of 2 years of nursing experience in an ICU or step-down unit is required, along with at least 1 year of telemetry experience. IV skills are preferred.
