Key Responsibilities- Verify patient identity using multiple identifiers
- Prepare equipment for efficient blood specimen collection
- Perform venipuncture and capillary punctures on patients as directed by physicians, following medical practice protocols for safety, infection control, and confidentiality
- Track collected specimens, storing and distributing samples to designated departments
- Conduct laboratory tests on specimens, maintaining daily tallies of collections performed and entering data into the lab information system
- Assist patients before, during, and after venipuncture, providing instructions on urine collection procedures
- Aid in the recovery of patients experiencing adverse reactions
- Clean and sterilize equipment, instruments, and work areas, adhering to safety, cleanliness, and infection control procedures
- Monitor storage temperatures and track expiration dates on refrigerated supplies
- Inventorize supplies and place orders to ensure adequate supplies for procedures
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Current Phlebotomist certification or registration through an accredited institution and/or agency
- Previous experience in phlebotomy or related fields recommended
- Knowledge of phlebotomy techniques, medical terminology, and clinic protocols and policies
- Skills in performing efficient and effective venipuncture, conducting cooperative interactions with patients and staff, prioritizing tasks and time management, and strong organizational skills
- Ability to interpret and respond appropriately to instructions, coordinate eye-hand movements to ensure patient comfort during venipuncture, and build rapport with patients and co-workers
This role performs duties in medical exam/procedure rooms, exposing the individual to communicable diseases, sharp instruments, bodily fluids, and cleaning chemicals.
The ideal candidate will possess the physical and mental abilities to perform the tasks normally associated with a Phlebotomist, including standing for six to eight hours per day, walking, bending, and reaching, occasionally lifting up to 30 lbs. of supplies and equipment, and helping with patient transport and transfer.
