Job Summary

The Residential Instructor is a vital member of our team at Alternative Services-Connecticut Inc, responsible for providing daily care and supervision to individuals with developmental disabilities. This role requires a strong commitment to creating a safe, healthy, and supportive environment that promotes the well-being and independence of our consumers.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Consumer Supervision: Monitor consumer behavior, implement behavior management programs, and document all activities and incidents.
  2. Reporting and Documentation: Provide programmatic and statistical reports, maintain accurate records, and complete incident reports in a timely manner.
  3. Home Maintenance: Ensure the safety, appearance, and cleanliness of the home, conduct sanitation and safety inspections, and make minor repairs as needed.
  4. Communication and Teamwork: Maintain a professional attitude, communicate effectively with colleagues, management, and outside agencies, and participate in staff meetings and trainings.
  5. Medication Administration: Distribute medications according to consumer medication schedules and DDS Medication Certification guidelines.
  6. Activities and Programs: Provide activities and programs for consumers, organize and supervise group activities, and interact with consumers to meet their needs and interests.
  7. Counseling and Support: Provide counseling and reinforcement to assigned consumers to address issues of progress, problems, and interests.
  8. Transportation and Safety: Assist in supervising and safely transporting residents to community activities, day programs, and social events.
  9. Emergency Procedures: Know and follow emergency home procedures for fire, hurricanes, power outages, accidents, and other serious incidents affecting residents.
  10. Normalization and Person-Centered Planning: Assist guardians, parents, and other individuals in understanding and implementing normalization and person-centered planning principles.
  11. Incident Reporting and Response: Report and respond to any violation of individuals' rights, participate in investigations, and complete incident reports in a timely and accurate manner.
  12. Other Duties: Assist with shopping, meal preparation, set-up, and clean-up, and participate in in-service training, seminars, and other opportunities for professional development.
Qualifications
  1. Education: Minimum possession of a High School Diploma or a G.E.D.
  2. Experience: Minimum two years of experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities or dual diagnosis, or equivalent education on a year-for-year basis.
  3. Drivers License and Insurance: Valid drivers license and ability to be insured by our insurance company throughout employment.
  4. Interpersonal Skills: Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with colleagues, management, and outside agencies.
  5. Certifications: Ability to obtain and maintain certifications in CPR, First Aid, PMT, and DDS State Medication Administration.
  6. Physical Abilities: Ability to lift up to 75 pounds, transfer, and physically intervene with individuals as required.
Accountability

The Residential Instructor is directly accountable to the Residential Manager or other designated person.
