Lead Researcher in Explosives Engineering

We are seeking a Lead Researcher in Explosives Engineering to spearhead experimental projects involving high explosives and other energetic substances. This role is critical in supporting the management of the U.S. nuclear arsenal, advancing conventional weapon design, enhancing counterterrorism strategies, and fostering commercial collaborations. The position is part of the Strategic Deterrence Directorate.
This role may offer a flexible work arrangement, allowing for a combination of in-office and remote work. You may have the opportunity to work from home several days a week.
Positions will be filled at either the SES.2 or SES.3 level based on your qualifications. Additional responsibilities may be assigned if selected for the higher level.
Key Responsibilities- Design, execute, assess, and interpret experiments driven by explosives in partnership with diagnostics teams, scientists, and senior technical staff, under limited supervision at various advanced facilities.
- Provide innovative scientific and engineering solutions for the design of hydrodynamic experiments, leveraging your expertise.
- Establish experimental requirements and oversee the execution of various components of the experiments.
- Conduct, arm, and analyze experiments utilizing high explosives.
- Ensure the assembly of experimental apparatus meets specified requirements.
- Perform quality assurance checks on experiments, including overseeing the setup, alignment, and execution of preliminary dry-runs to guarantee high-quality data collection.
- Analyze and interpret complex experimental data, document findings, identify issues, and plan projects to address these challenges while sharing insights gained.
- Present research findings to stakeholders and document experiments and results in both open and classified formats.
- Travel as required by project needs.
- Support initiatives to cultivate a culture of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accountability within the organization.
- Fulfill additional duties as assigned.
- Independently develop and provide advanced technical expertise using multi-physics and other sophisticated computational tools to model expected performance in diagnostics.
- Manage and oversee multiple complex experiments at various stages, including the arming and firing processes.
- Identify and advocate for the integration of advanced diagnostics and data analysis techniques in explosively driven hydrodynamic experiments, collaborating with diagnostic designers to enhance capabilities.
- Lead projects that require meticulous planning and execution, emphasizing effective teamwork.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, requiring U.S. Citizenship.
- Master's Degree or PhD in physics, engineering, or a related discipline, or a comparable combination of education and experience.
- Thorough understanding of a specific scientific area relevant to hydrodynamic testing.
- Experience in hands-on experimental science within laboratory and/or testing environments, with familiarity in formal operational procedures.
- Proven experience managing medium to large technical projects.
- Demonstrated self-motivation and initiative in tackling complex problems, with innovative skills to devise creative solutions.
- Experience working effectively both independently and within a multidisciplinary team environment to achieve long-term objectives.
- Strong interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence to collaborate effectively with diverse personalities in various settings.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills necessary for explaining, negotiating, and advising on experimental design, including proficiency in standard office software.
- Advanced knowledge in physics, engineering, mathematics, mechanical, aerospace, or nuclear engineering, or a related field.
- Significant experience leading and mentoring a multidisciplinary team.
- Proven track record of conducting and/or leading high-quality research in relevant physics and engineering fields.
- Experience working with explosives and/or other hazardous materials.
- Familiarity with computer-aided design tools.
- Experience managing personnel in a collaborative environment.
- Experience diagnosing rapid transient phenomena.
- Experience modeling the transmission and effects of ionizing radiation.
- Knowledge in areas such as dynamic radiography, high-speed photography, Photonic Doppler Velocimetry, radiometry, pulsed power systems, and grounding and shielding.
- Experience with scientific data analysis using programming languages or tools such as C++, Python, MATLAB, etc.
- Understanding of the Strategic Deterrence weapons program and/or explosive hydrodynamic experimentation.
