Director Investigative Science

A leading research organization in Seattle, Washington is seeking an exceptional scientific leader to serve as its next Director of the Investigative Science Division.

About the Role

As a key member of the Institute Leadership Team (ILT), the Director will provide strategic oversight for the Investigative Science Division, contributing to high-level administrative and scientific decisions. The ideal candidate will have a strong track record of scientific administrative leadership, sustained extramural research funding, and scholarly productivity as a Senior Investigator or Full Professor in Health Services Research, Behavioral Science, Health Policy, Epidemiology, or other health science disciplines aligned with the organization's mission.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Strategic Planning and Implementation: Develop and implement strategic plans to advance the division's research agenda, aligning with the organization's overall goals and objectives.
  2. Leadership and Supervision: Provide direct supervision, management, and professional development for managers and scientific investigators, including annual performance evaluations, feedback, and assessment of readiness for promotion.
  3. Budget Management: Oversee the division budget, ensuring effective management of resources, compliance with regulations, and accurate forecasting of expenditures.
  4. Research Program Development: Plan, initiate, and manage scientific research and evaluation programs on topics of national and international importance, identifying research issues, designing complex projects, and securing funding through major research grants and contracts.
  5. National and International Recognition: Establish a reputation as a national/international leader in research specialty areas, representing the organization at conferences, publishing in leading scientific journals, and presenting research findings to policymakers and healthcare leaders.
Requirements
  • Doctoral Degree: A doctoral degree (e.g., PhD, DrPH, SciD, or MD) in a healthcare-related field, such as medicine, epidemiology, behavioral science, or health services.
  • Leadership Experience: At least 10 years of experience as an extramurally-funded Principal Investigator, leading novel or complex research, implementation, or evaluation studies.
  • Management Experience: Five years of direct management experience supervising research scientists, including doctorate-trained investigators.
  • Funding Experience: Proven ability to successfully compete for external research funding and secure peer-review grant funding as a publicly funded investigator.
