Facilities Services plays a crucial role in supporting the mission of educational institutions by ensuring the effective operation and upkeep of physical facilities and grounds. The selected candidate will be responsible for independently performing, or leading a team in executing, a diverse range of maintenance and urgent repair tasks across university buildings. This includes working on the physical structure, as well as mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. The role involves regular inspections and repairs at a journeyman level, utilizing multiple skilled trades. The position requires the operation of company-issued vehicles.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 3:30 PM - 12:00 AM
Key Responsibilities
50% - This role serves as a lead position to assist in troubleshooting, repairing, and performing preventative maintenance on various systems including fire alarms, mechanical and electrical systems, three-phase power, generators, plumbing, and structural equipment. Responsibilities include lubrication, cleaning, inspection, and changing belts and filters in equipment. The technician will also perform repairs on HVAC units, reset fire alarm systems, and service electric motors and compressors.
40% - Responding to emergency situations involving utility loss or equipment failure is a critical aspect of this role. The technician will reset breakers and assist in repairing leaks in water or air lines, conducting repairs as time and expertise allow. Additionally, the technician may collaborate with Central Shop staff on more complex repairs and assist in training and mentoring general maintenance personnel.
10% - Other Related Duties: The technician will maintain an adequate inventory of tools, parts, and supplies necessary for job completion. They will also respond to after-hours emergency calls as required and assist in various maintenance areas as assigned, including snow removal and surface treatment.
Position Requirements
- Ability to reach, grasp, hold, lift, and place moderately heavy loads (up to 50 lbs) with or without accommodation.
- Capability to perform work at heights, in confined spaces, and under extreme temperatures (both hot and cold) indoors and outdoors.
- Proficient in operating company-issued vehicles for transporting staff and materials.
- Willingness to work occasional planned and unplanned overtime, including responding to after-hours emergencies.
- Availability to report to work during declared periods of inclement weather.
- Possession of a valid driver's license at the time of hire, with maintenance of that license throughout employment.
- Ability to digitally enter work order information and perform other electronic communications as required.
Required Qualifications
- High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency.
- Three (3) years of experience in a skilled craft area. A certificate from a vocational school or an associate's degree in a building or mechanical trade may substitute for one year of the required experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- One year of experience with generators and/or life safety systems.
- Familiarity with standard practices, tools, equipment, and materials associated with various skilled crafts and building trades.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions relevant to skilled crafts and building trades.
- Coursework or experience demonstrating the ability to read and interpret blueprints and electrical or plumbing schematics.
- Experience working in a university, college, or multi-building campus environment.
