Position Overview:
Key Responsibilities:
The Welding Engineering Construction Support Team at General Dynamics Electric Boat is seeking qualified candidates to provide engineering assistance for the welding initiatives at the shipyard.
This team is actively involved in both structural and piping welding tasks across various new construction projects, including advanced nuclear-powered submarines, as well as maintenance and refurbishment efforts for existing submarine classes.
Team members are tasked with addressing production welding challenges and implementing enhancements to operational processes for both nuclear and non-nuclear systems and structures throughout the submarine.
Engineers in this role must quickly assess problems and devise effective solutions while upholding the highest quality standards to ensure timely delivery of submarines to the Navy, meeting the rigorous demands of undersea operations.
On-site support during production welding is a critical aspect of this position, allowing engineers to tackle in-process welding challenges or oversee critical joints to prevent potential issues.
Additionally, engineers will offer technical assistance to various internal departments, including fluid, mechanical, and structural engineering teams.
Typical projects may involve, but are not limited to, the rectification of complex welding defects, correction of fabrication or machining discrepancies, integration of innovative processes and technologies into welding operations, analysis of welding performance metrics, and addressing quality concerns that may span multiple submarine classes.
Work assigned to this team is dynamic, encompassing both short-term and long-term initiatives. Successful completion of these projects often necessitates collaboration with other engineering, operational, and governmental entities, which may include travel to various welding programs or vendor locations.
Due to the nature of this role, engineers will encounter numerous career development opportunities and gain comprehensive knowledge of submarine systems and structures.
Welding/Materials Engineers in this position will be responsible for:- Investigating welding and fabrication-related construction and design challenges, providing written and/or on-site corrective measures.
- Developing, reviewing, and issuing technical engineering documentation and work instructions.
- Offering technical guidance and expertise on welding and fabrication-related matters to various engineering and operational teams within the organization.
- Collaborating with operations teams to provide hands-on support at the deckplate level.
- Evaluating and implementing new mechanized, automated, or robotic welding technologies and providing production support as necessary.
- Leading projects focused on process improvement and cost reduction related to welding and fabrication.
- Interfacing with various departments, including Engineering, Operations, Information Technology, and Training, as well as with governmental and Navy organizations as required.
- Interpreting fabrication, welding, non-destructive testing, and consumable specifications, both military and commercial.
- Establishing and maintaining company standards, procedures, and best practices in welding.
Qualifications:
Required:
A Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy, Structural Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Engineering (with a focus on metals), or a related field.
Proficiency in reading and interpreting specifications, procedures, drawings, and other technical documents.
Strong analytical skills to assess problems and implement effective solutions.
Internal candidates must originate from outside Operations Organizations.
Preferred:
Experience in an industrial setting is advantageous but not mandatory.
Familiarity with common industrial welding techniques and non-destructive testing methods.
Knowledge of other fabrication processes related to welding, such as thermal cutting, brazing, and metal forming.
Engineering experience in design, with the ability to read and comprehend drawings per ASME Y14 Standards and AWS A2.4 Welding Symbols.
Familiarity with commercial and/or government welding and fabrication codes and standards (e.g., ABS, AISC, ASME, AWS, MIL-SPEC, NAVSEA).
Skills:
Ability to provide in-person, hands-on support during problem evaluation and resolution.
Highly motivated and organized, with strong project management capabilities, meticulous attention to detail, and effective analytical and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
Strong communication skills to interact with all levels of management.
Proficient in written and verbal communication, with basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
Interpersonal skills necessary for effective problem investigation, data extraction, and collaboration with others to identify root causes and implement solutions.
Understanding of fundamental principles of welding metallurgy and the significance of process and quality controls throughout fabrication stages.
Awareness of common defects arising from lapses in process and quality controls.
