POSITION SUMMARY

The role involves delivering direct nursing services to patients under the guidance of a Registered Nurse.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

- Report significant observations, changes, and patient reactions to the appropriate healthcare personnel.

- Alert the team leader, charge nurse, or physician regarding patient observations.

- Maintain accurate documentation of patient records, including observations and changes.

- Communicate patient conditions effectively during shift changes.

- Conduct regular patient rounds to ensure safety and comfort.

- Focus on patient safety through fall prevention, restraint reduction, and proper medication administration.

- Address patient comfort and pain management needs.

- Show empathy and understanding towards patients and their families.


- Deliver direct patient care utilizing nursing processes and technical skills in accordance with hospital policies.

- Respond to call lights and assist patients with personal hygiene and daily living activities.

- Support the admission, transfer, and discharge processes for patients.

- Ensure patient comfort and safety at all times.


- Document all observed symptoms, reactions, treatments, and changes in patient conditions accurately.


- Identify the educational needs of patients and collaborate with the Registered Nurse for effective teaching and rehabilitation.

- Use appropriate abbreviations in documentation.

- Record patient responses and feedback accurately.


- Contribute to the development and ongoing updates of individual nursing care plans under the supervision of the Registered Nurse.

- Demonstrate knowledge of and adhere to hospital and nursing department policies and procedures.

- Assist physicians during patient rounds, procedures, and examinations, documenting as necessary.

- Administer medications, including IVs, in compliance with hospital protocols and document accordingly.

- Exhibit competency in IV insertion and tubing changes.

- Ensure proper use of medication dispensing systems and documentation of any narcotic wastage.

- Follow patient safety protocols during medication administration.

- Participate in the orientation of new staff and support the clinical training of nursing students.

- Attend mandatory in-service training and continuing education programs.

- Engage in unit meetings and stay informed through notices and memos.

- Take part in nursing service committees as required.

- Utilize specialized computer skills for care plan updates and order entry.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS


Professional nursing knowledge typically obtained through completion of an accredited nursing program.

Additional requirements may apply for specialty units.

Current State Nursing License required.

Essential Communication Skills:
- Provide clear instructions and explanations to patients and their families.

- Collaborate effectively with other healthcare team members.

- Maintain a current BLS Healthcare Provider certification.

- May require current ACLS certification or to obtain it within six months based on departmental needs.

*Emergency Department nurses are expected to maintain knowledge in various critical care areas and demonstrate competency in triaging emergency patients, addressing age-specific concerns, and understanding psychosocial and physiological aspects of care for critically ill or injured patients through ongoing education.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Typical patient care setting with minimal exposure to excessive noise, dust, or temperature fluctuations. A significant portion of the role involves standing or walking.

May encounter challenging patient care situations and exposure to communicable diseases.

Potential for overtime, weekend, and holiday shifts.

Exposure to hazards such as chemical waste, bodily fluids, and other infectious materials may occur.
