Job Summary

This is a challenging role that requires a strong background in water distribution system maintenance and construction work. The successful candidate will oversee the participation of and provide oversight to semi-skilled and skilled maintenance and construction work involving the City water distribution system.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, light trucks, and small equipment to perform maintenance and construction tasks.
  • Oversee and participate in the operation and maintenance of the water distribution system, ensuring that all work is completed safely and efficiently.
  • Lead a team of workers in performing a wide variety of planned and scheduled maintenance activities, including operating small to medium equipment.
  • Perform special worksite and traffic setup, as well as hydrostatic and bacteriological testing of new water lines.
  • Locate water lines for contractors and plumbers, and perform routine inspections on new water installations.
  • Monitor and complete all related paperwork, and ensure that all work is properly documented.
  • Dig ditches and trenches, lay pipe, install and repair valves, and perform other work as necessary.
  • Report to work on a regular and timely basis, and be available to work weekends and holidays as required.
Requirements
  • High School diploma or equivalent, and three (3) years of experience as a trades helper or maintenance laborer in any of the construction and maintenance trades.
  • Considerable knowledge of manual labor work practices, methods, tools, and materials of varied, semiskilled maintenance work.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions, and to lead a group of workers performing manual labor for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to use and instruct others in the use of mechanical tools and equipment, and to operate and instruct others in the use of various types of automotive and power equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications, and to plan and oversee the work of semiskilled and skilled workers.
  • Ability to understand and influence the behavior of others within the organization, customers, or the public in order to achieve job objectives and cause action or understanding.
Working Environment

This role will work primarily outdoors, and will require travel to other City locations as required. The successful candidate will be exposed to wet, hot, cold, and/or humid conditions, and will be required to work weekends and holidays as needed.

This is a safety-sensitive position, and the successful candidate will be subject to drug and alcohol testing, including random testing. Marijuana is one of the substances included in the drug panel screening, and possession of a medical marijuana license will not excuse the candidate from the testing process or the consequences of testing positive for marijuana.
