About the Role

The Commissary Zookeeper is a critical member of our team at Tulsa Zoo Management, Inc. This role is responsible for the daily preparation, distribution, and inventory management of food and supplies for each animal at the zoo. This position also receives and processes deliveries for each department within the zoo.

Key Responsibilities
  • Food Preparation and Distribution: Prepare daily food rations for hundreds of animal species of varying taxa according to specific dietary requirements, ensuring food safety and sanitation standards are upheld.
  • Inventory Management: Conduct regular inventory checks and report shortages or discrepancies.
  • Supply Chain Management: Assist in ordering and receiving food supplies.
  • Cleanliness and Sanitation: Clean and sanitize food preparation areas, equipment, and storage spaces.
  • Animal Care: Work closely with vet staff and other departments to ensure dietary needs are met.
  • Training and Development: Train, assist, and oversee work of volunteers/interns and ensure their safety while performing duties.
  • Communication: Participate in visitor education programs, formal and informal animal presentations and outreach programs, scheduled keeper talks, and provide accurate information to the public.
Requirements
  • Education: Bachelor degree in biology, zoology, animal science, environmental resources, wildlife management or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience: Must be 18 years or older and have a valid driver's license.
  • Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of guests, employees, and the general public.
Work Environment

This role requires working in a fast-paced environment with frequent exposure to outdoor weather conditions. The zookeeper will be required to stand for long periods, lift up to 50 pounds, and work near moving mechanical parts.
