Job SummaryThis position is responsible for the daily care and maintenance of assigned animal collection and associated facilities. The ideal candidate will have a strong working knowledge of aquatic LSS systems and aquatic husbandry practices.
Key Responsibilities- Daily cleaning of animal exhibits, service areas, and holding units
- Diet preparation, feeding, and inventory management
- General maintenance of exhibits, service areas, and holding units
- Maintenance of exhibits and holding units to ensure animal, keeper, and visitor safety
- Design and construction of exhibits/holding units
- Capturing and restraining animals for shipping/loading or routine/non-routine medical procedures
- Assisting Animal Health Department with medical treatments
- Daily observation of animal collection for injury, illness, aggression, stress, breeding activity, diet intake, and fecal consistency
- Maintenance of accurate records of daily observations
- Monitoring life support systems
- Identifying and communicating situations for repair and maintenance
- Working with animal collection on a one-to-one basis
- Applying appropriate techniques and opportunities for enrichment of the animal collections
- Devising and implementing breeding protocols, diet revisions, exhibit designs, and maintenance
- Researching the animal collection and creating environments that induce breeding
- Monitoring incubation process of eggs and recording weight and size
- Assisting in acquisition/de-acquisition of animal collection
- Training, assisting, and overseeing work of volunteers/interns
- Recognizing signs of pest infestation and combating pests/nuisance wildlife
- Maintaining area compliance with local, state, federal, and international regulations and standards
- Attending and participating in staff meetings
- Participating in visitor education programs, formal and informal animal presentations, and outreach programs
- Bachelor's degree in Biology, Zoology, Animal Science, Environmental Resources, Wildlife Management, or a related field
- Six months of exotic animal experience and/or training
- Valid driver's license and insurable on TZMI's insurance carrier
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
- Ability to work with potentially dangerous animals
- Good observational skills
- Strong interpersonal and communications skills
- Maintain good time management and productivity
- Actively seek ways to streamline processes and open to new ideas and approaches
