The University of Hawai'i is seeking a talented individual for the position of Assistant Professor in Tropical Plant Pathology in the Department of Plant and Environmental Protection Sciences (PEPS) within the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR). This tenure-track faculty position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to innovative research and teaching in tropical plant pathology, with a focus on molecular virology. Our ideal candidate will have expertise in plant virology, including research experience in virus-host interactions, virus detection and genome characterization, and the development of integrated pest management strategies.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop and lead research projects in basic and applied aspects of tropical plant virology, focusing on developing host-plant resistance to viruses on key crops in Hawaii, examining viral diseases that threaten plants endemic to Hawaii, and understanding the genetics and biology of the interaction among plants, viruses, and vectors to facilitate the development of integrated pest management strategies.
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in plant virology, such as PEPS 606 (Biology of Plant Pathogens: Bacteria and Viruses), periodic teaching of PEPS 714 (Advanced Plant Virology), and other courses assigned by the chair to meet the instructional workload.
  • Mentor graduate and undergraduate students, ensuring their academic and professional success, and secure extramural funds to support extension and research programs.
  • Publish refereed articles in leading journals, make scientific presentations at national and international conferences, and provide expertise to the Agricultural Diagnostic Service Center (ADSC) for plant virus diagnosis and control.
