Position Overview:

The Registered Nurse in the Operating Room possesses a deep understanding of perioperative nursing principles. This role involves overseeing the nursing care provided to patients within the surgical suite and managing the responsibilities of non-professional caregivers. The nurse ensures that care is delivered safely, efficiently, effectively, and in a timely manner, while also respecting the cultural, spiritual, and ethnic needs of patients and their families, in alignment with the mission and core values of New England Baptist Hospital.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducts thorough assessments of patient needs and formulates a comprehensive care plan.
  • Collaborates with the Preoperative RN to verify that all preoperative requirements are fulfilled prior to patient transfer to the operating room.
  • Coordinates patient care with the surgical team, including surgeons and anesthesiologists.
  • Performs the duties of a circulating nurse, ensuring a safe and sterile environment.
  • Acts as an advocate for patients, tailoring care based on individual assessments.
  • Supervises non-professional staff within the operating room.
  • Assists surgical teams as required during procedures.
  • Maintains accurate and thorough documentation of patient care.
  • Ensures a sterile environment by managing supplies and equipment effectively.
  • Upholds patient confidentiality and privacy at all times.
  • Engages in ongoing professional development and maintains current licensure and certifications.
  • Participates actively in staff meetings and training sessions.

  • Maintains infection control standards, including hand hygiene and sterile techniques.
  • Ensures proper handling and disposal of biohazardous materials.
  • Engages in patient safety and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Fosters a collaborative work environment with peers and colleagues.

Qualifications:

A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is required. A valid Massachusetts RN license is mandatory. Certification in Operating Room Nursing (CNOR) is preferred.

Certification from the American Heart Association in Heart Saver is required.

Experience:

A minimum of one year of experience in operating room nursing is required, with both scrub and circulating experience. The ability to thrive in a fast-paced team environment is essential.
