Position Overview:
The Registered Nurse within the Operating Room is well-versed in the principles and practices of perioperative nursing. This role entails overseeing the nursing care provided to patients in the surgical suite and guiding the efforts of non-professional caregivers. The nurse ensures that care is safe, efficient, effective, timely, and culturally sensitive, aligning with the mission and core values of New England Baptist Hospital.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct comprehensive assessments of patient needs and formulate a tailored care plan.
- Collaborate with the Pre-operative RN to verify that all preoperative requirements are fulfilled prior to patient transfer to the operating room.
- Coordinate patient care with the surgical team, including surgeons and anesthesiologists.
- Perform the duties of a circulating nurse, ensuring a safe and sterile environment.
- Advocate for patients and customize care based on individual assessments.
- Supervise non-professional staff within the operating room.
- Assist surgeons and anesthesiologists as necessary.
- Accurately complete all required documentation.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and uphold privacy standards.
- Engage in additional responsibilities as required.
- Keep an updated record of educational credentials and necessary licenses without prompting.
- Participate actively in staff meetings and training sessions.
Professional Standards:
- Exhibit a positive and collaborative demeanor.
- Stay informed on current nursing trends and practices.
- Contribute to the development and execution of policies and standards of care in the operating room.
- Seek guidance from other professionals to enhance skills and knowledge.

- Ensure proper patient identification in accordance with established policies.
- Document and update patient medical records in compliance with hospital policies.
- Adhere to established standards, protocols, and regulations in service delivery.
- Follow infection control protocols, including hand hygiene and aseptic techniques.
- Maintain cleanliness of equipment as per hospital standards.
- Properly handle and dispose of biohazardous materials.
- Engage in patient safety and quality improvement initiatives.
- Foster a collaborative work environment with colleagues and peers.
Qualifications:
A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is required. A Massachusetts RN license is mandatory. Certification in perioperative nursing (CNOR) is preferred.
Certification from the American Heart Association in Heart Saver is required.
Experience:
A minimum of one year of experience in operating room nursing is essential, with both scrub and circulating experience required. The ability to thrive in a fast-paced team environment is necessary.
