Position Overview:
The Registered Nurse in the Operating Room possesses comprehensive knowledge of perioperative nursing principles. This role is crucial in overseeing the nursing care provided to patients within the surgical environment, while also managing the activities of non-professional caregivers. The nurse ensures that patient care is safe, efficient, effective, timely, and culturally sensitive, aligning with the mission and core values of New England Baptist Hospital.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conducts thorough assessments of patient needs and formulates a tailored care plan.
- Collaborates with the Preoperative RN to verify that all preoperative requirements are fulfilled prior to patient transfer to the operating room.
- Coordinates patient care with the surgical team, including surgeons and anesthesiologists.
- Performs the duties of a circulating nurse, advocating for patients and customizing care based on individual assessments.
- Supervises non-professional staff within the operating room.
- Assists surgeons and anesthesiologists as necessary during procedures.
- Ensures accurate and complete documentation of all patient interactions.
- Maintains a safe and sterile environment for patients, including monitoring supplies and equipment.
- Upholds patient confidentiality and privacy at all times.
- Engages in additional responsibilities as required.
- Maintains an up-to-date education file and ensures all necessary licenses and certifications are current.
- Participates actively in staff meetings and training sessions.

- Cleans and maintains equipment according to hospital policies.
- Follows proper procedures for handling biohazardous materials.

- Fosters a collaborative work environment by sharing knowledge and skills with colleagues.
Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is required. A valid RN license in Massachusetts is mandatory. Certification in perioperative nursing (CNOR) is preferred.
Certification from the American Heart Association in Heart Saver is required.
Experience:
A minimum of one year of experience in operating room nursing is essential, with both scrub and circulating experience required. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced team environment is necessary.
