About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Archaeology Unit Manager to join our team at the Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for managing the archaeology unit and supervising archaeologists performing regulatory and outreach work for DAHP. You will also provide advanced consultative technical business information on archaeological issues and projects to other agencies, governments, or private entities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage the archaeology unit and supervise archaeologists performing regulatory and outreach work for DAHP.
  • Provide advanced consultative technical business information on archaeological issues and projects to other agencies, governments, or private entities.
  • Develop and teach various training courses, including Section 106, state laws, and implementing regulations, cultural resources training, and lectures on archaeological topics as requested.
  • Oversee archaeological survey work that is contracted to outside entities with budgets provided by the Legislature.
  • Assist and advise the GIS Unit and Records Unit on issues as they relate to archaeological data.
Requirements
  • Must meet the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualification Standards for Archaeology.
  • Professional qualifications include a graduate degree in archaeology, anthropology, or closely related field, plus at least two years of experience supervising employees and managing teams, and at least five years of experience in applying Section 106 and all federal laws and regulations as they apply to archaeological properties.
  • Advanced understanding of traditional cultural properties and at least five years of experience consulting with Tribes.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Extensive experience consulting with Tribes in the Pacific Northwest.
  • Advanced knowledge of 27.44, SEPA, and all state laws and regulations as they apply to archaeological properties.
  • Familiarity with GIS-based platforms.
  • Experience supervising union-represented employees.
  • Experience building relationships with stakeholder groups and organizations/agencies.
