Role Overview:

The Infant Toddler Preschool Teacher is responsible for planning and executing educational activities tailored for infants and toddlers within the Early Head Start Program, ensuring compliance with federal performance standards. This role also involves participation in the HS/EHS Quality Assurance initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Designs and implements daily lesson plans that provide enriching educational experiences for infants and toddlers, aligned with federal performance standards.
  • Organizes classroom spaces into distinct learning areas that foster an effective educational environment.
  • Conducts screenings and assessments of infants and toddlers to identify developmental and educational needs, creating individualized education plans as required.
  • Supervises meal times, classroom activities, and outdoor play to maintain a safe environment for all children.
  • Records children's developmental progress and completes necessary documentation in accordance with federal guidelines.
  • Initiates referrals to appropriate educational staff when necessary.
  • Employs active supervision techniques to encourage positive behavior in the classroom.
  • Builds nurturing relationships with children to support their development.
  • Maintains a comprehensive portfolio for each child, including regular observations and assessments.
  • Ensures that a significant percentage of children are prepared for preschool.
  • Coordinates classroom activities for parent and community involvement.
  • Participates in professional development workshops and meetings to enhance knowledge and share information.
  • Communicates effectively with parents regarding their child's progress and classroom activities through various channels.
  • Conducts health checks on children and reports any concerns to the appropriate personnel.
  • Reports any suspected child abuse or neglect to the designated authorities.
  • Plans and supervises field trips for children.
  • Requests necessary supplies and equipment for classroom use.
  • Inspects the classroom and outdoor areas to ensure safety and cleanliness.
  • Collaborates with other Early Head Start staff to address concerns regarding children and families.
  • Administers First Aid and CPR as needed.
  • Completes annual training on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding children, families, and staff in accordance with established policies.
  • Attends all required staff and parent meetings and activities.
  • Performs additional related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Physical Requirements:

Must be capable of lifting at least 45 lbs. and providing physical assistance for special needs children. Reasonable accommodations may be made for qualified individuals with disabilities.

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED; and a National Child Development Associate Credential (CDA) for Preschool or Infant/Toddler Endorsement; or Florida Child Care Professional Credential (FCCPC) for ages birth to five.

Experience:

  • Minimum of two years of experience working with children in Head Start, Early Head Start, preschool, or kindergarten settings.

Additional Requirements:

  • Completion of 45 hours of Florida Child Care Facility Training and a 10-hour course on Developmentally Appropriate Practices for Infants/Toddlers within the first year of employment, along with certification in First Aid and CPR within 90 days of hire, and successful completion of a Level II background screening and health assessments prior to employment.
  • Bilingual candidates are preferred, particularly in English/Spanish or other local languages.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Understanding of developmentally appropriate practices for infant and toddler education.
  • Knowledge of behavior modification theories and practices relevant to early childhood development.
  • Familiarity with current educational techniques for infants and toddlers.
  • Ability to present information effectively to groups.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • Conflict resolution skills among young children.
  • Capability to plan and implement educational curriculums for infants and toddlers.
  • Ability to engage in activities on the floor with children for extended periods.
  • Skills in data collection, organization, and evaluation.
  • Effective oral and written communication abilities.
  • Proficiency in maintaining work-related reports and files.
  • Ability to handle confidential information responsibly.
  • Competence in using computers and related software.
  • Adherence to established procedures.
  • Ability to administer CPR and First Aid.
  • Implementation of safety procedures.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with others.
  • Physical capability to assist in the transportation of special needs children.
