Pathologist Assistant

This position at Rush University Medical Center is key to assisting pathologists in the surgical and autopsy pathology areas. The ideal candidate will possess a strong work ethic, ability to work on multiple projects with frequently changing priorities, and excellent organizational skills. In this role, you will be responsible for performing surgical pathology grossing, dictation, and frozen sections. Additionally, you will oversee at least one area of the lab, which could include the Gross Room, student programs, the autopsy area, and/or a biorepository.
Responsibilities:
- Ordering and maintaining supply inventory
- Maintain inspection readiness
- Initiate/Maintain clinical databases
- Write technical procedures
- Participate in the development of Employee Engagement Activities
- Ensure the work area is maintained as a safe and uncluttered environment
- Meet turnaround time expectations by prioritizing and organizing the workload for the shift
- Utilize time effectively and seek out additional job duties when shift tasks are complete
- Keep work area neat, clean, organized, and well stocked at all times
- Help instruct students, residents, and new employees. Evaluate their performance within the established deadlines
- Accept and/or volunteer for special projects and complete them within an agreed-upon time frame
- Participate in procedure implementation and training of new staff and students
- Encouraged to identify and participate in process improvement projects
- Identify areas for process improvement, and initiate procedures or programs to respond to the deficiency identified
- Initiate Safety Events to document unsafe situations
- Respond to Safety Events, and complaints in a timely manner
- Maintain overall responsibility for rapid autopsy service at the Rush laboratory and coordinate participant autopsies at outside sites
- Responsible for autopsy coordination; guide and assist Study Coordinators with trouble-shooting autopsy-related matters and guide and assist back-up on-call autopsy technicians
- Maintain overall responsibility for the coordination and performance of biospecimen dissections for distribution
- Maintain responsibility for routine maintenance and proper working condition of biospecimen freezers, refrigerators, and associated alarm system
- Develop and implement quality assurance and quality control measures to ensure optimal biospecimen acquisition, storage, and accounting
- Implement new autopsy and dissection protocols, training staff in required new techniques and methods. Develop training videos and aids
- Makes recommendations regarding acquisition of laboratory instruments and capital equipment
