Job Overview

Position: Classroom Float/Behavior Support Aide - Head Start

Reporting Structure: This role reports to the Mental Health/Disability Coordinator and Education Coordinator.

Work Schedule: This position requires availability during all child attendance days and training days, Monday through Friday, from 8 AM to 4 PM, following a 9-month academic calendar.

Key Responsibilities:

This role may involve relocation within SENDCAA Head Start or Early Head Start sites to meet program needs. Regular attendance and punctuality are crucial for maintaining the program's consistency and routine.

Essential Duties:

  • Act as a mandated reporter, documenting any concerns to the appropriate authorities.
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures of Head Start and SENDCAA, including confidentiality and standards of conduct.
  • Engage in training sessions and meetings as required.

Educational Support:

  • Maintain knowledge of Head Start Performance Standards and Early Learning Outcomes Framework.
  • Participate in coaching to foster effective learning environments.
  • Assist in leading small group activities and transitioning children between activities.
  • Supervise children in various settings, including classrooms and restrooms.
  • Support educational activities such as reading and creative play.
  • Prepare children for nap time and provide coverage for teachers when necessary.
  • Engage actively with children to build relationships while being mindful of classroom dynamics.

Behavioral Support:

  • Implement Conscious Discipline strategies effectively in the classroom.
  • Participate in monthly reflective supervision sessions.
  • Familiarize with and apply individual Behavior Support Plans.
  • Document progress notes during classroom sessions.

Classroom Management:

  • Assist in maintaining classroom materials and supplies.
  • Ensure a clean and safe classroom environment.
  • Conduct daily cleaning tasks, including sanitizing surfaces and toys.
  • Support teachers in planning and executing daily activities.
  • Respect and acknowledge the cultural diversity of families.
  • May participate in home visits when necessary.

Health and Safety:

  • Model and promote good health practices among children.
  • Assist in facilitating family-style meals, encouraging social interaction.
  • Ensure children are supervised at all times.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Travel to different sites as needed.
  • Attend meetings and training sessions as required.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • CPR and First Aid certification within three months of hire.
  • High School diploma.

Preferred:

  • Associate Degree or higher in Early Childhood Education.
  • Child Development Associate credential.
  • Training in Behavior Support Techniques.
  • Enrollment in a degree program related to early childhood education.
  • Enrollment in the CDA Credential program, to be completed within one year of hire.

Experience and Skills:

  • Minimum of three months working with children.
  • Understanding of developmentally appropriate practices.
  • Effective communication skills with children, parents, and staff.
  • Able to work collaboratively with diverse groups.
  • Ability to work independently under supervision.
  • Supportive of team efforts and willing to learn from colleagues.
  • Adherence to confidentiality and communication protocols.

This position requires the ability to fulfill SENDCAA's mission while adhering to established policies and procedures. The working environment is generally positive, with exposure to moderate noise levels from children, both indoors and outdoors.

Physical Requirements: The role involves standing, walking, sitting, and engaging in various physical activities, including lifting and moving objects up to 40 pounds.
