Position Overview:

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation Forensic Services operates four forensic science laboratories across the state, focusing on the scientific analysis of physical evidence collected from crime scenes.

The Forensic Scientist III serves as the technical expert in specific forensic disciplines, responsible for the preservation, analysis, and interpretation of physical evidence in criminal cases for various law enforcement agencies.


Key Responsibilities:

Technical Responsibilities:

This role encompasses all technical duties related to the preservation, analysis, and interpretation of physical evidence in criminal cases. Responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining the integrity of evidence through proper chain of custody and security.
  • Utilizing necessary equipment and instrumentation for technical analysis efficiently.
  • Conducting thorough and timely technical reviews of casework.
  • Adhering to approved procedures for specific disciplines.
  • Complying with ISO/IEC 17025 technical requirements.
  • Providing guidance, training, and mentorship to junior forensic personnel.

Administrative Responsibilities:

This position also includes various administrative duties related to the preservation, analysis, and interpretation of physical evidence.


Liaison Responsibilities:

The role requires demonstrating exceptional customer service in all technical and administrative aspects of casework.


Professional Development:

Staying updated with the latest information in relevant forensic disciplines is essential.


Other Duties:

Additional responsibilities may be assigned based on business needs.


Minimum Qualifications:

A bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or a related natural science field from an accredited institution is required, along with a minimum of two years of full-time professional experience in latent prints.

Official or unofficial transcripts must be submitted with the application.


Substitutions:

A master's or doctorate degree in a related field may substitute for the bachelor's degree, but the two years of forensic latent prints experience cannot be substituted.


Preferred Qualifications:

Certification in Latent Prints through the International Association for Identification (IAI) is preferred.


Conditions of Employment:

Successful completion of a background investigation is required. A valid driver's license is necessary. The role may involve handling and analyzing evidence containing hazardous materials.
