Position Overview

As a vital member of the Pueblo County Detention team, your primary responsibility will be to uphold the security and order within the detention facility, ensuring the safety and well-being of all personnel, visitors, and inmates. This role encompasses the processing and supervision of detainees, management of the facility operations, and execution of related responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
  • Compile investigative documentation utilizing sketches, symbols, and mathematical calculations.
  • Utilize effective communication skills to interact with inmates, professional visitors, and the public, providing necessary information and resolving conflicts.
  • Intervene physically to de-escalate altercations.
  • Demonstrate proficient communication abilities in formal settings such as court appearances.
  • Respond to emergencies by providing basic medical assistance and ensuring the safe evacuation of individuals from hazardous situations.
  • Maintain composure in the face of verbal and psychological challenges from inmates and others.
  • Interpret and process various legal documents, including medical instructions and court orders.
  • Draft and manage reports with attention to grammar, spelling, and organization.
  • Input and retrieve data from computer systems, utilizing email and word processing tools.
  • Identify and collect evidence pertinent to criminal activities and safety concerns.
  • Offer guidance to the public regarding legal procedures as needed.
  • Represent the department in meetings and community engagements.
  • Supervise inmate activities, setting clear expectations and promoting accountability and respect.
  • Oversee the cleanliness and maintenance of the facility.
  • Control access to the detention center and monitor security protocols.
  • Transport inmates for various appointments, including court and medical visits.
  • Classify and assign housing for inmates based on established criteria.
  • Employ restraint techniques when necessary to ensure safety.
  • Pursue escapees as required within the facility and surrounding areas.
  • Utilize communication systems effectively to coordinate with staff and inmates.
  • Conduct regular inspections of the facility to ensure security and compliance.
  • Perform headcounts and searches as part of routine operations.
  • Manage inmate labor crews and work release programs.
  • Facilitate meal distribution and property management for inmates.
  • Engage in crisis intervention, including counseling and suicide prevention efforts.
  • Exercise judgment in classifying inmates and addressing the needs of diverse populations.
  • Conduct thorough searches to prevent contraband entry.
  • Respond to safety concerns, including fire hazards, with appropriate measures.
  • Gather information for investigations through interviews and evidence collection.
  • Fulfill additional duties as required to support the department's mission.
General Requirements
  • Must be at least 21 years of age, possess a high school diploma or GED, and hold a valid driver's license.
  • Successful candidates will undergo a comprehensive selection process, including background checks and evaluations.
  • This position requires shift work, including weekends and holidays.
