About the Work Unit
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation Forensic Services operates four forensic science laboratories across the state, specializing in the scientific analysis of physical evidence from crime scenes.
Position Overview
The Forensic Scientist III serves as the technical authority within specific forensic disciplines. This role involves the preservation, analysis, and interpretation of physical evidence collected in criminal investigations for various law enforcement agencies.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Duties:
Maintain the integrity of evidence through proper chain of custody and security protocols. Utilize necessary equipment for accurate analysis, ensuring timely quality checks. Conduct thorough technical reviews of casework and adhere to approved procedures. - Administrative Duties:
Oversee all administrative aspects related to the handling of physical evidence in criminal cases. - Professional Development:
Stay informed about the latest advancements in relevant forensic disciplines. - Additional Responsibilities:
May include conducting training sessions, participating in technical working groups, validating methodologies, and developing technical operating procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
A bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or a related natural science field is required, along with a minimum of two years of full-time casework experience in latent prints.
Preferred Qualifications
Certification in Latent Prints from the International Association for Identification (IAI).
Conditions of Employment
Successful candidates must complete a background investigation, including a polygraph examination, fingerprint-based criminal history check, psychological evaluation, and drug testing. A valid driver's license is also required.
