The Superior Court of California, County of San Diego is looking for qualified candidates for the role of Senior Accountant.


Currently, there is one (1) opening for a Senior Accountant.

The selected candidate will undertake complex professional accounting responsibilities for an operational accounting unit and will oversee professional and/or clerical personnel.

The resulting eligible list from this recruitment may be utilized to fill other Senior Accountant positions as they become available.

Individuals who have previously applied for Senior Accountant under any other Examination Number must re-apply to be considered.


Senior Accountants may be assigned to various court locations.


NOTE:


Employees of the Superior Court are scheduled to receive a cost of living increase effective the first full pay period in the upcoming fiscal year.


JOB SUMMARY

A Senior Accountant engages in advanced professional accounting tasks, including cash accounting, fund accounting auditing, and payroll, tax, or benefits administration; analyzes financial records; provides legislative analysis; and may supervise professional and clerical staff.


Typical responsibilities may include but are not limited to: overseeing the maintenance of a complex set of cost and control accounts; reconciling court accounts with financial records; developing and recommending enhancements to improve efficiency and accuracy; reviewing and analyzing centralized accounting procedures; assisting in the development and enhancement of automated fiscal accounting systems; planning, assigning, and participating in staff activities, including selection, training, evaluation, and disciplinary actions; and assisting with payroll account reconciliations and employee benefit programs.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE should possess the following knowledge and abilities:

KNOWLEDGE OF:

The principles and practices of management related to training, evaluating, and supervising staff; generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) applicable to cash control processes, cost accounting, fund accounting, benefits, payroll, and budget processes; appropriation and encumbrance control concepts; preparation and analysis of financial statements; accounts payable, accounts receivable, and purchasing; business law terminology; financial internal controls; and auditing concepts applicable to various accounting systems.


ABILITY TO:

Plan, organize, and direct a diverse fiscal program; interpret and apply legal and administrative concepts to accounting and payroll functions; comply with tax laws; develop and manage accounting systems for large departments; prioritize and process work assignments to meet deadlines; lead and supervise staff; accurately analyze data and adopt effective actions; maintain confidentiality; establish cooperative working relationships; prepare comprehensive accounting reports; and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in accounting or a closely related field; AND have three (3) years of progressively responsible experience as a professional accountant.

SUBSTITUTION:

A Master's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or economics may substitute for one (1) year of the required experience.

OR Have two (2) years of full-time experience as an Accountant with the Superior Court.

Preferred experience:
In government/public sector accounting
As a supervisor or lead
