Role Overview
The Heavy Equipment Operator III position encompasses a range of responsibilities associated with roadside mowing and highway upkeep. This role requires the operation of substantial machinery, including tractors equipped with 15' mowing decks, to execute roadside mowing and maintenance duties.
Additionally, the operator may be tasked with driving heavy-duty trucks and machinery for the loading, transportation, and distribution of materials, as well as for the construction and upkeep of roadways and drainage systems.
Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Primarily operates heavy machinery such as tractors and 15' mowing decks for roadside mowing and maintenance tasks.
- Operates various trucks and equipment, including dump trucks, flatbeds, loaders, backhoes, compactors, graders, dozers, tankers, and pickups.
- Conducts routine inspections and maintenance of machinery to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Ensures the upkeep of trucks, tools, and equipment.
- Adheres to all safety protocols and guidelines to maintain a secure work environment.
- Performs additional tasks such as small machine mowing, weed control, and other related duties as assigned.
- Engages in physical labor for the maintenance, restoration, or construction of roadways and drainage systems.
- Assists with traffic management.
- Clears trees, limbs, and shrubbery along rights-of-way or adjacent road and traffic areas.
- Removes debris from ditches, culverts, drains, gutters, and beaver dams.
- Must consistently meet work schedule and attendance standards.
Qualifications and Educational Background
A high school diploma or GED is required; supplemented by two (2) years of experience in operating heavy-duty trucks and equipment; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Physical Requirements: Candidates must be physically capable of operating heavy-duty trucks and equipment, which requires the manipulation of multiple controls. Excellent eye/hand/foot coordination is essential for safe and productive operations. Must be able to exert 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Physical demands exceed sedentary work (i.e., manual labor, standing, and walking for extended periods). Exposure to outside atmospheric and environmental conditions, including potential encounters with snakes, rodents, spiders, and vegetation, is expected.
Data Analysis: Requires the ability to assess and compare observable, functional, structural, or compositional characteristics of work sites, proportions of materials transported or distributed, and trucks, tools, and equipment utilized.
Communication Skills: Requires the ability to effectively convey or exchange information through speaking and/or signaling; includes issuing and receiving assignments and/or directions. Must interact tactfully and effectively with the public and co-workers.
Language Proficiency: Must be able to communicate effectively in Standard English and convey information to others.
Cognitive Abilities: Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to execute detailed but uncomplicated written or oral instructions; to address problems involving concrete variables in situations with limited standardization; to make independent judgments in the absence of supervision; and to acquire knowledge of topics related to the primary occupation.
Numerical Skills: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract tools; to multiply and divide; to determine percentages and decimals; to interpret graphs; and to compute discounts, interest, profit and loss, and ratios and proportions.
Spatial Awareness: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape.
Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using office equipment.
Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, control knobs, switches, etc. Must possess minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
Color Recognition: Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of colors.
Interpersonal Skills: Requires the ability to interact with people beyond merely giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing calmly under stress and when confronted with individuals acting under stress. Must be able to manage multiple tasks with simultaneous demands under stressful conditions.
Communication Abilities: Requires the ability to talk and/or hear: (talking to express ideas through spoken words; hearing to perceive sounds). Must be able to communicate via phone.
