About the Role

The City of Lakewood is seeking a highly motivated and dedicated individual to fill the position of Adaptive Aquatics Specialist. As a key member of our Therapeutic Recreation team, you will play a vital role in implementing and facilitating comprehensive aquatic programs for individuals with disabilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the development and implementation of aquatic programs for people with disabilities, including swim lessons and recreational activities.
  • Provide individualized support and assistance to participants, including hand-over-hand support, demonstration, and verbal cues.
  • Work collaboratively with recreation instructors and coaches to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants.
  • Manage program resources, including supplies and equipment, and make onsite program decisions as needed.
  • Supervise staff, participants, and volunteers, and provide direction and feedback as required.
Requirements
  • Some high school diploma or equivalent preferred; education in working with people with disabilities is an asset.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Basic Sign Language skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, participants, parents, and caregivers.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and in a timely fashion with participants, families, and caregivers, both verbally and non-verbally.
Work Environment

The work environment varies by location of work, with programs running during the day, evenings, weekends, and overnight. Office work is typically completed during typical business hours.
