Position: Maintenance Worker

Department: Facilities

Reports To: Director of Facilities and Sustainability

Job Summary:

This role involves a variety of essential tasks aimed at maintaining the functionality and appearance of the library's facilities. The Maintenance Worker will be responsible for performing routine upkeep and repairs on various mechanical systems, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all visitors.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct regular maintenance on mechanical systems, including cleaning equipment and library infrastructure.
  2. Assist with repairs and enhancements to electrical, plumbing, and security systems.
  3. Support landscaping efforts by maintaining outdoor areas, including mowing, trimming, and planting as necessary.
  4. Coordinate logistics for library events, ensuring rooms are prepared and equipment is set up as needed.
  5. Respond to emergencies and communicate effectively with security and emergency services.
  6. Oversee recycling initiatives and promote environmental awareness among staff.
  7. Participate in safety planning and emergency response training.
  8. Assist in developing maintenance schedules for various tasks such as painting and cleaning.
  9. Serve as a key contact for facility-related emergencies during assigned shifts.
  10. Maintain high standards of cleanliness and safety throughout the library.
  11. Support the onboarding and training of new staff, ensuring they understand library protocols.
  12. Engage with patrons to provide information about library services and policies.
  13. Monitor security measures and report any safety concerns to management.
  14. Exhibit strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  15. Conduct special projects as assigned to enhance library operations.
  16. Ensure the library's assets are protected and that security protocols are followed.
  17. Demonstrate professionalism and represent the library's values in all interactions.

Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma or GED with relevant experience in maintenance or construction.
  2. Proficient in using construction tools and understanding basic maintenance principles.
  3. Ability to read and interpret safety documents and maintenance instructions.
  4. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  5. Basic math skills for measurements and calculations.
  6. Problem-solving abilities and the capacity to prioritize tasks effectively.
  7. Basic computer skills for communication and reporting.
  8. Customer service skills to interact positively with library visitors.

Work Environment:

  1. Ability to work in various conditions, including outdoor environments and potential exposure to noise from equipment.
  2. Must be adaptable to different work settings and able to handle physical demands of the job.
