Job Summary

Cook County Health and Hospitals is seeking a highly skilled Senior Nuclear Medicine Technologist to join our team in the Radiology department at Provident Hospital. As a Senior Nuclear Medicine Technologist, you will be responsible for performing nuclear medicine examinations at a highly technical level, including special procedures using radiopharmaceuticals under the direction of the Radiologist.

Key Responsibilities
  • Examination Preparation: Carefully review requisitions for examinations or treatment as submitted by medical staff, ensuring that patients receive the proper radiopharmaceutical by following departmental protocols.
  • Radiopharmaceutical Preparation: Prepare radiopharmaceuticals following specified instructions for each required procedure, selecting, calculating, and counting isotopes for administration to patients.
  • Examination Execution: Set up proper positions for examinations with minimal discomfort or distress to patients, using sandbags, binders, and special apparatus as necessary.
  • Equipment Operation: Operate ionization chambers, Geiger-Mueller Counters, and scintillation apparatus to maintain required positions.
  • Technical Data Recording: Record technical data used for daily QA and during patient exams, cleaning equipment and reporting system failures to Clinical Engineering and Department Administration.
  • Result Calculation and Reporting: Compute results of nuclear medical procedures, calculate results using electric calculators and nomograms, and post results on appropriate forms for physician interpretation.
  • Training and Development: Assist with training nuclear medical technologist students, including demonstration and other related training.
  • Coverage and Spill Response: Cover on-call duties and respond to spills of radiopharmaceuticals, reporting to the Department Physicist (RSO) and/or Nuclear Medicine Safety Technician for decontamination.
  • Training and Development Support: Review training plans, assist in setting up training classes, prepare manuals, outlines, lectures, demonstrations, tests, and other training materials.
  • Supervision and Scheduling: Assist with supervision, make out schedules, and receive special instructions from medical physicians, giving instructions from medical officers, and performing instructions as provided by medical staff for handling special exams not within routine procedures.
  • Problem-Solving and Quality Assurance: Observe to ensure all procedures are done and assist in working out satisfactory solutions.
Requirements
  • Registration and Certification: Registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Nuclear Medicine or Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) in Nuclear Medicine.
  • Experience: Two (2) years of clinical experience in Nuclear Medicine.
  • Licensure: Licensed by the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Radiation Safety and Physics: Thorough knowledge of the operation of nuclear instruments and the physical composition of radionuclides to minimize radiation hazards to patients, self, and other personnel.
  • Radiological Mathematics and Physics: Working knowledge of radiological mathematics, basic radiation physics, radiation units, and radiation protection.
  • Communication and Interpersonal Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills necessary to communicate with all levels of staff and a patient population composed of diverse cultures and age groups.
  • Professionalism and Composure: Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and composure when challenged.
