Job Overview:

Under the supervision of the Registered Nurse, the Surgical Technologist plays a vital role in assisting the surgical team in providing both direct and indirect patient care within the Operating Room. This position is essential in fostering a professional, compassionate, and responsive healthcare environment for patients, physicians, and team members.

The Surgical Technologist is expected to demonstrate comprehensive knowledge, sound judgment, and proficient skills grounded in biological, physiological, behavioral, and social sciences as part of their foundational training. They assist the surgical team in recognizing patient needs and proactively engage in planning and implementing interventions as necessary.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Engage in performance improvement initiatives within the hospital or department.
  • Assist in maintaining cleanliness of light fixtures, tables, Mayo stands, and ring stands.
  • Verify supplies, instruments, and equipment against preference cards and procure any missing items.
  • Scrub for assigned surgical procedures.
  • Anticipate the surgeon's requirements during operations, ensuring a safe and sterile environment.
  • Utilize supplies and sutures efficiently.
  • Handle all specimens with accuracy.
  • Assist in preparing the patient prior to applying surgical dressings.
  • Contribute to the upkeep and organization of instruments, equipment, and supplies.
  • Exhibit knowledge of the location, care, and operation of all surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Assist in cleaning and restocking all operating rooms.
  • Initiate and/or assist in updating preference cards.
  • Adhere to Universal Precautions at all times.
  • Participate in staff meetings and discussions.
  • Seek opportunities for enhancing departmental or interdepartmental processes.
  • Act as a clinical resource for department staff, students, volunteers, and other departments, contributing to teamwork that ensures quality patient care.
  • Implement appropriate measures to ensure patient safety.

Qualifications:
  • Current certification as a surgical technologist
  • BLS certification (AHA)
  • ACLS certification preferred
  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program - REQUIRED
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience as an OB Technician (L&D) in an acute care setting.
  • Must possess acute care experience in a hospital environment.
