Role of the High School History Teacher

The High School History Teacher will be instrumental in advancing our educational mission by designing and implementing engaging learning experiences that promote the intellectual, emotional, physical, and social development of students. The ideal candidate will:

  • Deliver a comprehensive curriculum that emphasizes critical analysis of World History, U.S. History, American Government, and Economics, preparing students for Advanced Placement (AP) and college-level studies;
  • Encourage student-led discussions on historical themes, prompting learners to engage with open-ended questions, participate in peer debates, and construct well-reasoned arguments;
  • Guide students in understanding authors' perspectives and the significance of sourcing, while developing essential skills in argumentation, corroboration, inquiry, and historiography through the analysis of primary and secondary sources;
  • Create an inclusive and supportive classroom atmosphere where students feel empowered to share evidence-based viewpoints and diverse perspectives;
  • Collaborate with the History department to establish academic and engagement objectives for students;
  • Engage in regular meetings with school leadership to assess and respond to trends in student performance;
  • Employ differentiated instructional strategies to meet the diverse needs of all learners;
  • Build strong relationships with students to ensure they feel valued and understood;
  • Work closely with families to provide necessary resources that support student learning;
  • Participate in ongoing professional development, mentorship, and coaching opportunities;
  • Contribute to school-wide meetings aimed at fostering community, modeling core values, and promoting student success;
  • Collaborate with grade-level teams to set academic goals and refine instructional practices.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess at least a Bachelor's degree and appropriate certification. Candidates should hold a Certificate of Eligibility, with guidance available for obtaining full certification in New Jersey. Applicants must demonstrate cultural awareness, effective communication skills with diverse populations, mastery of subject content, teamwork capabilities, high expectations for student achievement, and a foundational understanding of child development.
