Definition and Key Responsibilities

As a Child Custody Mediation Specialist, you will play a vital role in facilitating the Court's processes by providing child custody mediation services aimed at resolving conflicts surrounding contested custody and visitation matters. In instances where an agreement cannot be reached, you will prepare comprehensive recommendations for the Court regarding the best interests of the child or children involved. This position operates under established guidelines but requires independent decision-making in complex situations.

Essential Duties

The following are essential functions and responsibilities of this role:
  • Analyze case information and prioritize assigned cases; engage with parties to clarify the mediation process and explore custody and visitation alternatives; promote parental engagement throughout mediation; liaise with relevant contacts to gather or confirm information pertinent to custody matters.
  • Conduct confidential mediation sessions to assist in the creation of custody and visitation agreements; facilitate negotiations between parties during mediation; collaborate with involved parties and agencies to ensure the child's best interests are prioritized; if mediation fails, draft and submit a recommended custody and visitation plan to the Court.
  • Collaborate with various stakeholders, including social services, child protective agencies, parents, children, therapists, and legal representatives.
  • Assess risk factors during mediation, including domestic violence and substance abuse, and take necessary actions to ensure the safety and welfare of the child; report any suspected child abuse or neglect in accordance with legal requirements.
  • Provide expert guidance and support to clients, the Court, and the community; respond to inquiries from various stakeholders and stay informed on developments in family law and related fields.
  • Perform specialized administrative tasks related to case management, including maintaining accurate case records and statistical data.
  • Participate in training and professional development opportunities to meet continuing education requirements.
  • Communicate effectively, demonstrating sensitivity and discretion in handling emotionally charged situations.
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships with judicial officers, colleagues, and the public.
  • Travel as necessary to fulfill job responsibilities.
Qualifications

To qualify for this position, candidates must possess:
  • A master's degree in social work, psychology, marriage and family therapy, or a related field.
  • Two years of experience in counseling or psychotherapy, preferably in family court settings.
Desirable Qualifications

Current licensure as a Clinical Social Worker, Marriage and Family Therapist, Licensed Professional Counselor, or Clinical Psychologist is preferred.

Knowledge and Skills

Successful candidates will demonstrate knowledge of:
  • Interviewing techniques, conflict resolution, and mediation strategies.
  • Community resources available for client referrals.
  • Child development and the psychological impact of family dynamics.
  • Legal terminology and court procedures.
Other Requirements

Possession of a valid driver's license may be required. Candidates must pass a background check as mandated by law.

This role requires the ability to perform various physical tasks, including prolonged sitting, walking, and lifting up to 25 pounds. The work environment is typically an office setting with standard business hours.
