The Optical Manufacturing Applications Engineer collaborates with the Applications Team to develop advanced machine tool processes, while providing essential applications support to sales functions. This role involves the fabrication of customer-requested samples, ensuring they meet specifications in a timely manner.

The engineer will be responsible for training customers with tailored agendas based on their specific applications. This position is crucial in supporting the daily operations and maintenance of ultra-precision machine tools, as well as contributing to manufacturing and metrology advancements in the fabrication of optical components. Additionally, this role will assist Engineering in the development and testing of new products.

Core Responsibilities

  • Execute high-precision diamond turning and milling for a diverse range of customer-specific applications.
  • Initiate and support the development of user interface applications.
  • Maintain expertise in core manufacturing and machining processes.
  • Establish relevant manufacturing methodologies.
  • Provide customer support and training related to high-precision optical manufacturing equipment.
  • Assist the sales department with the technical aspects of equipment/process quotations.
  • Collaborate on recommendations for third-party software application integrations.
  • Document and understand the operations, manufacturing processes, and variations of high-precision CNC lathing and milling equipment and software.
  • Effectively communicate with current and prospective customers regarding equipment.
  • Design, build, and assemble appropriate fixtures, programs, and processes necessary to demonstrate the manufacture of optical quality parts tailored to customer applications.
  • Document troubleshooting procedures to ensure detailed reporting of process solutions.
  • Operate various optical metrology equipment (e.g., microscopes, radiuscopes, interferometers) for the qualification of machined parts.
  • Travel to customer facilities for training on equipment operation and provide applications/process support, as well as attend conferences for presenting newly developed processes.
  • Perform other assigned duties as necessary.

Required Education and Experience

  • Associate's degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school, along with five years of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of GD&T, ASME, ANSI, and other relevant standards for dimensioning and tolerancing.
  • Proficiency in computer-aided drafting techniques, CAD modeling and design, and advanced three-dimensional parametric CAD systems.
  • Strong understanding of mathematical formulas and computations (e.g., algebraic, geometric, shop math).
  • Ability to write clearly and informatively; edit work for spelling and grammar; present numerical data effectively; and read and interpret technical information.
  • Experience with CAM software and programming CNC machine tools.
  • Build effective relationships with customers by understanding their expectations.
  • Demonstrate teamwork and cooperation.
  • Possess problem-solving skills; gather and analyze information to offer practical solutions.
  • Exhibit innovation by identifying new ideas and approaches that enhance the organization's systems or products.
  • Strong computer skills are essential.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree from a university or technical school, along with ten years of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in single point diamond turning and machining a variety of materials.
  • Ability to read and analyze G-code and step files.
  • Effective communication and presentation skills in both large and small group settings.
  • General knowledge of optics and related formulas.
