Pharmacy Technician

We are seeking a highly skilled Pharmacy Technician to join our team at the Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration. As a Pharmacy Technician, you will play a critical role in providing administrative, clerical, and clinical support in our outpatient and specialty clinics.
Key Responsibilities- Obtain necessary supplies from laboratory service and stock and review supplies for proper storage and outdates.
- Perform Point of Care (POC) testing for International Normalized Ratio (INR) and review medication history, changes, adherence, and complications of therapy during scheduled INR testing process.
- Assist with addressing direct oral anticoagulation (DOAC) dashboard flags and monitor and alert Pharmacist to available DOAC lab monitoring results.
- Assist with scheduling future lab orders and follow-up appointments, print daily schedules, and "no shows/lost to follow-up" reports for patients on Warfarin, and review patient records for out-of-range INRs being addressed.
- Alert providers of need to address out-of-range INR results, review both reports and patients' electronic health record (EHR) to identify which patients have and have not been followed-up with in the last 60 days, and provide support rescheduling patients who have missed appointments.
- Complete telephone interviews of patients who have obtained INRs from outside labs, triage incoming telephone calls from patients, family members, and other health providers, and address INR results utilizing a facility-approved Warfarin protocol.
- Manage and triage telephone calls, secure messages, and faxes received in the Anticoagulation Management Program, and document activities in the Electronic Health Record as required.
- Receive and review prescriptions received from outside clinics to determine appropriate eligibility, validate electronic prescriptions to confirm the appropriate patient, provider, and medication are selected when submitting the prescription to the VA EHR, and identify formulary medications and coordinate process for approval of non-formulary or prior authorization medications.
- Communicate non-formulary and prior authorization denials to non-VA clinics and provide supporting documentation, as necessary, monitor and document actions taken to ensure prescriptions are addressed timely, and document activities in the Electronic Health Record as required.
- Answer questions from Pharmacy and non-Pharmacy personnel regarding drug distribution, identify basic therapeutic problems, and alert Pharmacist to the possible need for clinical intervention, and document activities in the Electronic Health Record as required.
- Participate in quality assurance, process improvement activities, and performance monitors, perform monthly inspections for outdates, assist in other patient care areas as deemed necessary to maintain the consistency of overall Pharmacy services, and participate and assist in patient care activities during emergency situations.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
- Must be able to pass a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
- Must be able to serve a probationary period.
- Must be able to pass a background/security investigation.
- Must be able to complete an online onboarding process.
- Must be able to participate in the seasonal influenza vaccination program.
- Must be able to participate in the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination program.
