Job Responsibilities:

The selected candidate will be tasked with assisting a sanitation refuse vehicle along designated routes to collect refuse, yard waste, and recyclables. This role involves outdoor work in various weather conditions, including manual loading of refuse into the vehicle, operations at waste processing sites, and other assigned tasks.


Key Duties Include:
  • Conducting pre-route inspections of the sanitation vehicle to ensure it is clean, serviced, and properly equipped.
  • Assisting in unloading refuse at designated disposal sites.
  • Performing routine maintenance checks on the sanitation vehicle.
  • Engaging in customer service interactions with residents and city personnel, adhering to established protocols.
  • Collecting litter and debris from public areas.
  • Accompanying the refuse vehicle to gather waste, managing carts, and ensuring proper disposal.
  • Gathering yard waste and recyclables from residential areas.
  • Documenting mileage and fuel usage for operational records.
  • Supporting the driver with navigation and safety during vehicle operation.
  • Participating in safety training sessions.
  • Collaborating with fellow city employees to maintain a clean and safe environment.
  • Performing additional related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

To be successful in this role, candidates must demonstrate the ability to fulfill the essential duties outlined above. The following qualifications are required:


Education and Experience:

A general educational background is preferred, with or without high school completion, along with 0 to 6 months of relevant experience or training.


Communication Skills:

Ability to comprehend and interpret documents such as policy manuals and safety guidelines; capable of writing routine reports.


Mathematical Skills:

Basic proficiency in arithmetic operations and the ability to apply these skills in practical situations.


Critical Thinking Skills:

Ability to apply common sense in executing simple multi-step instructions and managing standardized tasks.


Certificates and Licenses:

None required; a valid driver’s license is preferred for those operating city vehicles.


Working Conditions:

This position involves outdoor work in challenging conditions, including exposure to extreme weather and noise levels.


Physical Requirements:

The role demands high physical activity, including lifting and moving heavy items, standing, walking, and operating equipment.
