Position Summary: Under direct supervision, engages in fundamental labor activities related to the collection and transfer of solid waste for the Solid Waste division. Operates vehicles, machinery, and tools while adhering to all safety protocols and standard operating procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conducts a range of unskilled and semi-skilled labor tasks; aids in the collection and transfer of solid waste, refuse, and discarded materials; participates in cross-training for various skills within the Solid Waste division.
- Assists in the upkeep of vehicles and equipment, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and procedures established by the Solid Waste division.
- Employs appropriate safety measures in all tasks performed; identifies and reports issues and emergency situations; recognizes, avoids, and reports unsafe practices, conditions, accidents, and injuries.
- Contributes to divisional operations through consistent and punctual attendance.
- Fosters a positive relationship between the City of Odessa and the public by exhibiting courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City personnel; maintains confidentiality regarding work-related matters and City information; performs additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines:
- High school diploma or GED is preferred.
- Relevant work experience is advantageous but not mandatory.
Knowledge Required:
- Fundamental safety procedures and regulations.
Skills Required:
- Safe and effective operation and maintenance of tools and equipment; ability to learn and adhere to standard operating and safety procedures.
- Ability to closely follow verbal and written instructions and procedures.
- Capacity to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with colleagues.
Physical Demands and Work Environment: Work is conducted both indoors and outdoors, as well as at City facilities. The role requires continuous physical exertion and the ability to bend, reach, stoop, and lift objects. Workers may encounter safety hazards and operate dangerous tools and equipment. Adherence to safety precautions is mandatory, including the use of safety equipment. City-approved safety footwear is required. Weekend work may be necessary as directed by the SW Director/Superintendent.
Licensing and Certification Requirements: Candidates must possess a valid Driver's license; a CDL is preferred but not essential.
