Position Overview

The Uncommon Schools-Relay GSE Teaching Residency presents an extraordinary opportunity for aspiring educators to receive top-tier teacher training while gradually assuming increased teaching responsibilities. This two-year residency, a collaboration between Relay Graduate School of Education (Relay GSE) and select partner schools, is tailored for recent graduates and individuals transitioning into the teaching field who seek an innovative pathway into education. As a proud member of the AmeriCorps National Service Network, this program offers a unique experience.

During the initial year of the Residency, participants will be employed full-time as Residents at Uncommon Schools, contributing to student achievement and supporting school-level systems. Residents will engage in weekly Deliberate Practice sessions led by Relay GSE's expert faculty, alongside additional training in effective teaching methodologies. As their skills and confidence grow throughout the first academic year, Residents will gradually take on more teaching duties. By the end of the first year, they will be well-prepared to transition into full-time teaching roles at Uncommon Schools campuses in their second year, continuing to receive coaching and support as they become the teacher of record.

Throughout the two-year program, Residents will also be enrolled as graduate students at Relay GSE, participating in Master's-level courses that enhance their teaching capabilities. The curriculum is meticulously designed to equip new educators with the skills to set high behavioral and academic expectations, create rigorous, data-driven lessons, and cultivate a nurturing environment for their students. The Relay GSE Teaching Residency culminates in a comprehensive understanding of effective classroom teaching.

Responsibilities of Residents:

  • Tutor small groups and individual students;
  • Assist teachers in classroom activities;
  • Co-teach lessons;
  • Lead elective and enrichment courses;
  • Substitute teach as needed;
  • Complete Relay GSE coursework and graduate classes;
  • Take all necessary state assessments for teacher certification.

Qualifications:

Ideal Candidates:

  • Individuals committed to teaching in New York state schools for a minimum of three years following the first year of the residency;
  • Recent college graduates or career changers of any age and background who are passionate about becoming effective educators;
  • Goal-oriented and driven individuals eager to make a positive impact on K-12 students and their communities, possessing the resilience and optimism to overcome challenges;
  • Team players who are excited to collaborate with school faculty and graduate school peers.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • A bachelor's degree conferred;
  • A minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.75;
  • A letter of recommendation;
  • U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status.

Additional Information:

During their first two years with Rochester Prep, Relay Residents are salaried staff members while simultaneously completing the Relay program. For those who remain at Rochester Prep for additional years, Residents will receive a stipend to cover out-of-pocket costs associated with their participation in Relay, effectively covering the expenses of their Master's degree within four years of starting the program.
