Position Overview

JOB TITLE: Basketball Official – YMCA Certified

REPORTS TO: Program Director

FLSA TYPE: Non-Exempt

POSITION OBJECTIVE:

The Basketball Official is responsible for overseeing all officiating duties during games, matches, and tournaments throughout the designated sports season. This role emphasizes participant safety and member retention through exceptional customer service. Collaboration with fellow staff members is essential to meet the YMCA's goals and objectives.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (not an exhaustive list):

  • Guarantee the safety and welfare of all members, participants, and staff by interpreting and enforcing YMCA policies.
  • Evaluate playing conditions to ensure a safe environment for athletes.
  • Engage with coaches and players before games to clarify any rule modifications that may apply.
  • Arrive early for game setup and stay post-game for equipment and area cleanup.
  • Ensure games commence and conclude as scheduled.
  • Act as a positive role model for players, parents, coaches, and fellow officials by upholding all rules, promoting good sportsmanship, and officiating in line with the YMCA Youth Sports philosophy.
  • Report any injuries to the supervisor promptly.
  • Before each game, gather all teams to the center and facilitate Character Development and/or pledge.
  • Comprehend and enforce all game regulations and rules.
  • Foster a nurturing and secure environment by reporting any suspicious behavior that may indicate child abuse or violate the code of conduct.
  • Assist in organizing supplies, maintaining cleanliness of the facility, and caring for equipment.
  • Notify the supervisor of any equipment damage or loss.
  • Perform other assigned duties as necessary.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Possess a solid understanding of the assigned sport, including game rules and equipment.
  • Completion and achievement of YMCA Basketball Official certification is mandatory.
  • Current certifications in CPR/AED, First Aid, and O2 are required.

Preferred:

  • Experience in sports; prior officiating experience is advantageous.
  • Bilingual candidates (English/Spanish) are preferred.
