Job Overview

POSITION TITLE: Certified Basketball Referee – YMCA

REPORTS TO: Program Director

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

POSITION OBJECTIVE:

The Certified Basketball Referee will oversee all officiating responsibilities for games, matches, and tournaments during the designated sports season. The role emphasizes participant safety and member retention through exceptional customer service. The referee is expected to collaborate effectively with colleagues to fulfill the YMCA's mission and objectives.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (not an exhaustive list):

  • Guarantee the safety and welfare of all members, participants, and staff by interpreting and enforcing YMCA policies.
  • Evaluate playing conditions to ensure player safety.
  • Engage with coaches and players before games to clarify any rule modifications that may apply.
  • Arrive early for game setup and stay post-game for equipment and area cleanup.
  • Ensure games commence and conclude as scheduled.
  • Act as a positive role model for players, parents, coaches, and fellow officials by upholding all rules, demonstrating sportsmanship, and officiating in alignment with YMCA Youth Sports principles.
  • Report any injuries to the supervisor.
  • Before each game, gather all teams to the center and facilitate Character Development and/or pledge.
  • Comprehend and enforce all game regulations and rules.
  • Foster a nurturing and secure environment by reporting any suspicious activities that could lead to child abuse or violate the code of conduct.
  • Assist in organizing supplies, maintaining cleanliness of the facility, and caring for equipment.
  • Notify the supervisor of any equipment damage or loss.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Strong understanding of the assigned sport, including game rules and equipment.
  • Completion and achievement of YMCA Basketball Official certification.
  • Current certifications in CPR/AED, First Aid, and O2.

Preferred:

  • Experience in sports; prior officiating experience is advantageous.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
