Job Description:

A Medical Assistant plays a vital role in providing high-quality patient care in an ambulatory clinic setting. This position involves caring for patients with acute and chronic needs in the Lewistown Clinic.

This is a PRN on-call position, requiring flexibility to meet the needs of the clinic. The successful candidate will work at least one shift per week in the clinic.

Clinic Hours:

Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. No call and no weekends.

The Medical Assistant will perform general administrative and patient care tasks in accordance with the Intermountain MGPSMA Scope of Practice and other established policies and procedures.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Greeting and preparing patients for healthcare providers while maintaining a positive and caring attitude.
  • Attending to patients' needs, coordinating care, administering care, and documenting appropriately.
  • Providing patient safety and protection of patient privacy rights by observing HIPAA regulations.
  • Obtaining and recording patient information, including vital signs, height, weight, allergies, current medications, medical history, and chief complaint.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures.
  • May be required to draw and collect blood samples and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis.
  • Scheduling patients for diagnostic testing and follow-up as appropriate to ensure completion of testing.
  • Communicating test results to patients and establishing a plan of care by phone or mail as directed by the healthcare provider.
  • Documenting patient plans of care, tests, and examination results in the medical record as directed by the healthcare provider.
  • Preparing, cleaning, and sterilizing instruments and maintaining equipment; stocking patient exam rooms while maintaining cleanliness and organization, and disposing of contaminated items according to protocol.
  • Administering ordered medications and/or vaccines via oral, injection, topical, rectal, ophthalmic, and/or inhalant administration.
  • Escalating non-routine issues, questions, and/or concerns to the practice manager and/or healthcare provider(s).
  • Ensuring safety checklists/quality controls are completed as required.
  • Demonstrating sound judgment and composure with the ability to take appropriate action in questionable or emergency situations.
  • Promoting the mission, vision, and values of Intermountain Health, and abiding by service behavior standards.
Requirements:

To be successful in this role, the candidate must:

  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Hold current BLS Certification upon hire or within 60 days of hire upon approval.
  • Have three months of healthcare experience and phlebotomy experience.
  • Successfully complete initial MA onboarding within 90 days, annual skills fair, and in-services for site-specific tasks.
  • Be able to function in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment.
  • Have strong organizational skills and attention to detail and accuracy.
Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Graduated from an accredited Medical Assistant program.
  • Successfully completed an Accredited National Certification Exam for Certified Medical Assistants (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA).
Work Environment:

The Medical Assistant will work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, interacting with patients, healthcare providers, and other staff members. The position requires regular attendance and the ability to understand and apply information, policies, procedures, and skills required by the position.

The successful candidate will possess knowledge of medical terminology and abbreviations, as well as medical practice and care to assist in providing safe, quality patient care.

The position requires proficiency in utilizing various computer software programs, including Microsoft Office Suite and Electronic Health Records, as well as the ability to learn applications relevant to the position.

Physical Requirements:

The Medical Assistant will be required to:

  • See and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
  • Frequently interact with patient care providers, patients, and visitors, requiring verbal communication and hearing and understanding spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately.
  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy.
  • Lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients.
  • Walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment.
