Job Description:

A Medical Assistant plays a vital role in providing high-quality patient care in an ambulatory clinic setting. This position involves caring for patients with acute and chronic needs in the Lewistown Clinic.

Clinic Hours:

Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. No call and no weekends.

This is a PRN on-call position to meet the needs of the clinic, requiring at least one shift per week in the clinic.

Responsibilities:
  • Provides general administrative and patient care tasks in accordance with the Intermountain MGPSMA Scope of Practice and established policies and procedures.
  • Communicates effectively and diplomatically within a multi-disciplinary care team.
  • Greets and prepares patients for healthcare providers while maintaining a positive and caring attitude.
  • Attends to patients' needs, coordinates care, administers care, and documents appropriately.
  • Ensures patient safety and protection of patient privacy rights by observing HIPAA regulations.
  • Obtains and records patient information, vital signs, height, weight, allergies, current medications, medical history, and chief complaint, etc.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures.
  • May be required to draw and collect blood samples and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis.
  • Performs routine tests, including EKGs, hearing, and vision screens, as requested by healthcare providers.
  • Schedules patients for diagnostic testing and follow-up as necessary to ensure completion of testing.
  • Communicates test results to patients and establishes a plan of care by phone or mail as directed by healthcare providers.
  • Documents patient plans of care, tests, and examination results in the medical record as directed by healthcare providers.
  • Prepares, cleans, and sterilizes instruments and maintains equipment; stocks patient exam rooms while maintaining cleanliness and organization, and disposes of contaminated items according to protocol.
  • Administers ordered medications and/or vaccines via oral, injection, topical, rectal, ophthalmic, and/or inhalant administration.
  • Escalates non-routine issues, questions, and/or concerns to the practice manager and/or healthcare providers.
  • Ensures safety checklists/quality controls are completed as required.
  • Demonstrates sound judgment and composure with the ability to take appropriate action in questionable or emergency situations.
  • Promotes the mission, vision, and values of Intermountain Health and abides by service behavior standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Current BLS Certification required upon hire or within 60 days of hire upon approval.
  • Three months of healthcare experience and phlebotomy experience required.
  • Successful completion of initial MA onboarding within 90 days, annual skills fair, and in-services for site-specific tasks required.
  • Ability to successfully function in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail and accuracy required.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Graduate from an accredited Medical Assistant program.
  • Successful completion of an Accredited National Certification Exam for Certified Medical Assistants (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA).
Work Environment:

This position requires regular attendance to perform work on site during regularly scheduled business hours or scheduled shifts.

Able to understand and apply information, policies, procedures, and skills required by the position.

Possesses knowledge of the meaning and use of medical terminology and abbreviations.

Knowledge of medical practice and care to assist in providing safe, quality patient care.

Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment procedures as well as medical equipment and instruments used in administering patient care.

Proficiency utilizing various computer software programs, including Microsoft Office Suite, Electronic Health Records, and the ability to learn applications relevant to the position.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.
  • Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergencies.
  • Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy.
  • Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients.
  • Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment.
  • Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment.
  • May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
