Marine Microbiology Research Scientist

The University of Georgia is seeking a dedicated Postdoctoral Research Associate to join our team within the Franklin School of Marine Programs. This role is integral to advancing our understanding of marine ecosystems through innovative research.
About the Role
The selected candidate will engage in a variety of research activities focused on microbiology, biogeochemistry, and microbial genomics. The position involves both laboratory work and field research, including expeditions at sea.
Key Responsibilities
- Sample Preparation and Laboratory Analysis: The appointee will process molecular biological samples from various marine environments, including the Gulf of Mexico. Responsibilities include DNA and RNA extraction, sample preparation for sequencing, and participation in advanced laboratory techniques.
- Data Analysis: The candidate will utilize programming languages such as Python and R to analyze complex bioinformatics data. Responsibilities include quality control of sequencing data and comprehensive analysis of omics datasets.
- Publication Development: The appointee will contribute to the preparation of scientific manuscripts, including data analysis, figure generation, and writing. Collaboration with senior researchers will be essential for successful publication.
- Field Research Participation: The individual may participate in oceanographic research expeditions, conducting analyses of sediment and water samples, and tracking microbial processes.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a Ph.D. in a relevant field such as Microbiology, Biological Oceanography, Ecology, or Marine Sciences. A strong background in biogeochemistry and advanced laboratory skills is preferred.
Work Environment
This is a full-time position with a standard work schedule. The successful candidate will be expected to work both in the laboratory and at sea, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability in various environments.
