Job Description

Executive Director

Grades of Green is seeking a seasoned professional to serve as its Executive Director. This key role will provide strategic leadership to the organization, overseeing day-to-day operations and ensuring the fulfillment of our mission and goals.

The Executive Director will be responsible for managing staff, securing financial resources, overseeing financial management, administration, operations, and human resources. This role will also involve representing the organization externally, engaging with stakeholders, and developing strategic partnerships.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five years of experience in a director role at a nonprofit organization, with a proven track record in fundraising, grant writing, and donor cultivation. They will also possess excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage diverse audiences and stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Leadership & Board Relations (20%):
    • Provide visionary leadership to advance the mission and objectives, ensuring alignment with organizational values and strategic goals.
    • Develop a strong working relationship with board members and board committees to have input and support between board meetings.
    • Prepare board materials in advance of quarterly meetings to ensure most effective use of time in discussion, input and review of programs, activities and financials.
  • Development and Fundraising (40%):
    • Develop and execute comprehensive fundraising strategies to secure financial support for programs.
    • Cultivate and steward relationships with major donors, foundation partners, corporate sponsors, and other stakeholders.
    • Identify grant opportunities and write grant proposals that can fund activities in line with our Strategic Plan.
    • Plan and execute our annual fundraising event, Verte, as it is the largest source of income supporting all of our programming efforts.
  • Financial Management (15%):
    • Oversee the financial health and sustainability of the organization, ensuring ownership of resources and compliance with relevant regulations and best practices.
    • Manage a budget of ~$1 million/year, overseeing grant processing, reporting, budget tracking, and regulatory compliance.
    • Prepare projected budgets and year-to-date actuals for review by the board at least quarterly.
  • Administration, Operations, and Human Resources (15%):
    • Ensure the organization runs efficiently, with effective systems in place for human resources, technology, and data management.
    • Oversee staff recruitment, training, development, and retention strategies to build a high performing team.
    • Collect and analyze data on key performance indicators to inform operational and strategic decisions.
  • Marketing & Communications (10%):
    • Convey our mission, vision, and impact to diverse audiences through speaking engagements, media appearances, and communications.
    • Oversee staff communication efforts including website, social media, monthly newsletters, and press releases.
Requirements
  • Minimum of five years in a director role at a nonprofit organization.
  • College degree required; Master's degree or further education preferred.
  • Proven track record in fundraising, grant writing, and donor cultivation.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage diverse audiences and stakeholders.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple demands and deadlines.
  • Proficiency in accounting systems (QuickBooks), Google Docs, MS Office, and CRM/Sharepoint (training provided if necessary).
  • Experience in staff management, ability to work independently and as a team member, take initiative, and lead a team to achieve goals.
  • Possession of a passion for youth education and sustainability principles.
