Key Responsibilities:

The Utility Technician is responsible for a variety of tasks associated with the management, maintenance, and service of natural gas pipelines. This role may involve new construction, installation, and upkeep of gas distribution networks, as well as residential, commercial, and industrial metering devices. The technician plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety of both staff and customers.

Daily Duties Include:

  • Reading and interpreting meters and related instruments, managing the activation and deactivation of gas services for residential and commercial clients, including appliances and equipment.
  • Addressing customer inquiries regarding high billing or unusual consumption patterns.
  • Fabricating and assembling various types of gas piping and fittings, including mains and meter sets, while adhering to safety and construction standards.
  • Locating underground gas systems as part of maintenance and safety checks.
  • Conducting inspections related to Cathodic Protection, corrosion control, and leak surveys.
  • Responding to gas leaks and emergency situations, ensuring proper documentation and reporting.
  • Providing mentorship and training to less experienced team members.
  • Carrying out additional tasks as assigned by management.

Qualifications:

Essential Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED) is mandatory.
  • 1-2 years of relevant experience in a similar role, or 3-4 years of experience in natural gas operations.
  • Proficiency in performing all tasks associated with the Utility Technician Apprentice role.
  • Ability to read maps and operate computers and communication devices effectively.
  • Competence in basic mathematical functions.
  • Strong judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3-4 years of experience in a similar position.
  • Familiarity with the local geographic area.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to pass a pulmonary function test for respiratory equipment.
  • Capable of climbing ladders and navigating various terrains.
  • Must maintain balance on slippery or uneven surfaces.
  • Must be able to operate a motor vehicle safely.
  • Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 100 lbs.
  • Must have vision correctable to 20/40 and be able to detect gas odors.
