Job Title: Certified Welding Inspector

The Certified Welding Inspector will be responsible for inspecting raw materials, in-process work, and finished products for conformance to shop drawings, specifications, and codes. This includes:

  • Reading and understanding shop fabrication drawings for steel bridge fabrication
  • Reading and understanding specifications
  • Reading and understanding codes and code requirements for highway bridges, railroad bridges, state DOT's, welding & bolting, cleaning & painting
  • Receiving and maintaining Quality Control Inspection records
  • Examining raw materials and comparing to ASTM codes
  • Verifying dimensions of product or material to match shop drawings
  • Interpreting engineering drawings, diagrams, and conferring with management or engineering staff to determine quality and reliability standards
  • Understanding requirements for testing of welds, bolts, blast profile, coats, etc.
  • Visually inspecting welds for conformance to code
  • Assisting in AISC annual audits
  • Performing internal audits
  • Completing NDE training, testing, and certification
  • Maintaining CWI certification
  • Completing required quality control inspection reports
  • Performing all duties needed to maintain QA departmental functions on a daily basis
  • Acting as liaison to outside inspectors
  • Reviewing and signing off on NDE/testing P.O. for department as well as PRS and VBB
  • Determining testing for mechanical requirements on samples
  • Operating any diagnostic equipment needed to perform job
  • Enforcing non-conformance procedure as required
  • Ensuring inspection equipment used in shop is calibrated
  • Preparing weld procedures for shop use
  • Preparing weld procedure qualifications
  • Assisting in development of Standard Procedure
  • Preparing and submitting repair procedures for fabrication errors
  • Helping develop monthly quality summaries
  • Resolving Quality issues due to shop errors or field errors
  • Performing related duties as needed by supervision

Requirements:

  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Minimum of three years related experience and/or training in steel fabrication
  • AWS CWI certification
  • Ability to read and interpret shop fabrication drawings
  • Ability to read and interpret American Welding Society (AWS) D1.1 and D1.3 Code Criteria
  • Ability to interface effectively with shop supervision, management, and welding personnel
  • Ability to perform and document inspection activities during fabrication and welding of structural piece members
